KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee's 2015 median age was 38.6 years, slightly older than the U.S. median of 37.8 years. That's according to numbers released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau and reported by the Tennessee State Data Center at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
According to the center, Cumberland County had the highest median age at 50.5. Montgomery County had the lowest median age at 30.5.
The age range with the highest growth rate was 65-69 years old, but the age range with the largest number of people was 20-24 years old.
The data center also reported Tennessee's racial composition in 2015 was 5.3 million white; 1.2 million black or African-American; 145,000 Asian; 70,000 American Indian and Alaska Native; and 11,000 Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander. Those categories were reported alone or in combination.
