NASHVILLE - The city of Chattanooga is getting a $127,000 state grant to help divert household hazardous waste from its landfill.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation today announced that Chattanooga as well as Knoxville, Metro Nashville and Memphis are each getting $127,000 for the operation and/or maintenance of permanent hazardous waste facilities.

"These grants will provide an environmentally friendly option for citizens to dispose of household cleaners, pesticides, and other hazardous materials commonly found in homes," TDEC Commissioner Bob Martineau said in a news release.

Martineau said the efforts by the permanent facilities, coupled with his department's mobile household waste collection service, "are essential to protecting human health and the environment."

TDEC's household waste collection service allows Tennessee residents in areas without permanent disposal sites the opportunity to dispose of hazardous materials. Events take place during the spring and fall.
