Jerry Mitchell announces Chattanooga City Council re-election bid

Jerry Mitchell has announced he will seek re-election to the Chattanooga City Council District 2 seat.

District 2 extends from the North Shore to Northgate, including the precincts of Lupton City, Riverview and Stuart Heights.

"I will continue to bring common sense and collaboration to my service on the council," Mitchell said.

Mitchell has served as the district's representative since 2013, when took 54 percent of the vote in a three-way race to replace retiring Councilwoman Sally Robinson.

He currently serves as the Council Vice Chair and chairs the body's Human Resources Committee; he has previously served as chairman of the council's Budget and Finance Committee. He works in commercial real estate and previously served as the director of Chattanooga's Parks and Recreation Department.

Mitchell touted his commitment to ensuring Chattanooga is "as business-friendly as possible," citing diligent work to promote outdoor amenities and attract signature events to boost tourism tax dollars. He also cited his support for District 2 public schools and the city's early childhood education initiatives.

"There is no more important work than giving all our children the opportunity to learn and succeed," Mitchell said.

In the next four years, Mitchell said he wants to focus on public safety funding, homelessness and mental health, workforce development, infrastructure maintenance and government transparency.

Mitchell said there is no reason why the government cannot keep its citizens informed and enlist their participation with current available technology.

"By continuing to focus on growing the economy, improving public safety, education, infrastructure and government responsiveness, together we will produce the place our children and grandchildren will want to call home," Mitchell said.

In accordance with the city charter, council and mayoral elections will be held March 7, 2017.
