"Over the past four years, I have worked hard to bring a strong fiscal conservative approach to city government while advocating for additional funds to increase our public safety efforts that will help make our neighborhoods safer, address long-overdue maintenance of our streets and create needed programs to support veterans who need our help," Henderson said.

Henderson, who won the seat in a four-way race in 2013, called for increased accountability and transparency in city government and advocated for critical funding of public works, public safety and workforce development.

He cited boosts in the road paving budget and funding of several major paving projects across his district, including Browns Ferry Road and West View Road, among his achievements. Henderson's announcement also mentioned his votes to fund improvements to Youth and Family Development centers in District 1 and his work with Hamilton County 4 Vets to establish a Veterans Treatment Court.

Henderson said he wants to work with business and educational leaders to establish a workforce development program for adults and youth, encourage economic development by supporting small businesses and working with the mayor's office and police chief to identify new programs to counter "the growing presence of gangs in our city and stop the spread of violence in our neighborhoods."

Henderson served as the City Council chairman from April 2014 to April 2015. He now serves as chairman of the council's Public Safety Committee, a post he has held since 2015.

Elections for the Chattanooga mayor and City Council members will be held March 7, in accordance with the city charter.
