UPDATE: Silverdale inmate who died identified; was booked for public intoxication

UPDATE Feb. 23 at 6:27 p.m.: The inmate who died at CoreCivic was Dana Shunice Palmer, 45, of Saint Elmo, according to a press release from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department.

She was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on a charge for public intoxication Feb. 14. She was transferred to CoreCivic two days later.

Original story Feb. 23 7:21 a.m.: The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) is investigating the death of an inmate at the Silverdale Detention Center, now known as CoreCivic, formerly CCA.

An inmate was transported to a local hospital Wednesday night, Feb. 22, and pronounced dead.

District Attorney Neal Pinkston asked the HCSO to investigate the incident. The Hamilton County Medical Examiner's Office will be conducting an investigation into the cause of death.

The identity of the inmate will not be released pending the family's notification.
