Daniel Aaron, groundbreaking scholar, dead at 103

NEW YORK (AP) - Daniel Aaron, a pioneering scholar of American studies and the first president of the Library of America, has died.

Aaron died Saturday at age 103 at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, according to his son, Paul Aaron. Daniel Aaron had been admitted a week earlier for breathing problems.

Aaron explored and explained his country through books, essays and diplomatic missions. He traveled from Eastern Europe to South America and wrote such influential books as "Men of Good Hope" and "The Unwritten War." He also helped found the Library of America, which issues high-quality editions of canonical American authors from Herman Melville to Philip Roth.
