COLUMBIA, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say a man who shot his roommate and fled was pursued by police before he himself was shot and wounded by an officer.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says an unidentified officer shot 25-year-old Jerry Patton, who is African-American, early Tuesday in Columbia.

Bureau spokeswoman Susan Niland says Patton was involved in a dispute with his roommate, shot his roommate in the leg and took off in a car.

Officials responded and spotted the car at a convenience store. Patton rammed into an officer's vehicle to get away.

Following a pursuit, police cornered Patton and he attempted to escape again by ramming into another officer's vehicle. During the encounter, the officer fired into the Patton's car, striking his leg.

Patton and his roommate were taken to the hospital.
