Dachshunds come to Chattanooga to compete in largest show of the year

We are being overrun by dachshunds this weekend.

The world's biggest dachshund pageant is in Chattanooga. For the dogs' sake, here's hoping judge Edie Franklin from "Best in Show" is not on hand with her hands-on style. That would be no fun.

To the dog owners, we say welcome. To the dogs, we say "Ruff."

And if this is going to be a regular deal, we need a better name. How about Connect the Dachshunds? Or with a dance number, we could go with Polka Dachshund.

We have to believe Oscar Mayer or Ball Park Franks would throw some sponsorship coin this way.

We're No. 1

Chattanooga is No. 1 in social well-being, according to Gallup, which polled more than 170,000 folks in the nation's biggest 100 cities.

No, there was no cash prize with the distinction.

This is great. We guess. If the Gallup folks called you, dear reader, please feel free to email me, I'd love to know what they asked to figure out how awesome we are in social coolness.

Guns in the Capitol

Now, we're all for baring arms -- we wear short sleeves a lot.

Kidding. We fully support the Second Amendment, but really have to question the backbone of our state legislators if they want the ability to tell everyone where they can have guns while not being willing to allow guns in the state Capitol.

Boston Marathon killer

Thankfully, the jury found Dzhokhar Tsarnaev guilty in the Boston Marathon bombings.

Now we need to get that clown's fanny in the chair. Yes, that chair. And sooner rather than later.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, the average cost of a death row inmate is more than $90,000 higher per year than a normal inmate.

So if this 21-year-old terrorist lives another 40 years, that's a cool $3.6 million extra to house him after he rigged a bomb that injured hundreds and killed three.

It makes me think of the great quote from Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf when asked about forgiveness toward the 9/11 bombers. Stormin' Norman said plainly, "I believe that forgiving them is God's function. Our job is simply to arrange the meeting."

Now that's fast food

Bojangles is offering stock options. Starbucks is looking to give its baristas a chance at a free college education. And now Taco Bell is delivering more than heartburn.

It's the salad days for fast-food workers.

And this comes on the news last week that McDonald's is going to embrace the "real chicken" experience. Great.

But what were they doing before, the virtual chicken experience?

Feedback -- good and bad

We welcome all kinds of feedback -- good and bad -- so feel free to email or Tweet.

There was a lot of response to our support of Sen. Bob Corker on each side of the coin.

Let's take a sample of each, first a good one from Bill:

"What a great article in this morning's paper! My thoughts on Corker have been the same as yours for a long time. I wish he had started campaigning a long time ago. Even though I agree with him on his stance concerning unions, I think this might hurt him.

"Keep up the good work. I hope you will voice your feelings on your radio show."

Now, a less than praising mention from Yvonne on Twitter:

"Jay Greeson Does Joseph Goebbels For Bailout Bob Corker ..."

Well, we always wanted to be famous, so there's that.

Until next week.
