Greeson: From old-school ways to Twitter, MoonPie keeps us smiling

MoonPie snack cakes have been iconic since 1917.
MoonPie snack cakes have been iconic since 1917.

The only thing better than a MoonPie, they say, is a MoonPie and an RC Cola.

Trust me. And kids, if need be, just ask your parents.

MoonPies and RC are as Southern as supper, Chick-Fil-A, "fixin' to" and "Bless her heart."

And when it comes to old-school marketing, the MoonPie and RC marriage is up there with Oreos and milk, peanut butter and jelly and hamburgers and fries.

As the old-school ways continue to give way to new-school technologies, apparently the MoonPie brand is checking all the boxes.

Or better yet, blue- checking all the right boxes.

Blue check marks, of course, are the verification of sources and accounts on Twitter, one of the most popular social media platforms these days.

Companies of all shapes and sizes, whether they are delivering news or snack cakes, understand the reach of social media.

And MoonPie, the signature product of locally owned Chattanooga Bakery, apparently has a Twitter wizard running its account.

So far this month, the @MoonPie (blue check mark, of course) account has become the bees' knees of sweet and saucy at the same time.

This month alone, @MoonPie has shared a play it authored in which all the characters are named MoonPie. (Probably fair to say the screenplay was sweet but not completely filling, all things considered.)

There also were the tweets about handling net neutrality by microwaving a MoonPie, wishing a happy fifth birthday to someone's cat named MoonPie, and introducing a MoonPie named Brayden. (That last one was in answer to a question about whether MoonPies have names. The company suggested that some already did, and so they introduced Brayden.)

It's likely a fitting end to a zany year for the Chattanooga company, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. Lest we forget, sales went through the roof in August, when the total lunar eclipse rolled over us. Heck, because of eclipse parties, this paper's Business Editor Dave Flessner reported a few months ago that online sales leading up to the eclipse eclipsed all of online sales in 2016.

Oh, my. Or better yet, Oh Pie.

With that online rep rising, @MoonPie continued its domination as a digital dessert.

We'll lend the floor now to Twitter-user Kaela Thompson, handle @Kaela Dianne97, who picked the following social media melee with our friends: @MoonPie.

@KaelaDianne97: nobody likes moon pies

@MoonPie: Yes they do

@KaelaDianne97: Oh so sales are booming

@MoonPie: Yep

@KaelaDianne97: They should call you MoonBye because nobody likes you

@MoonPie: They should call you Kayla because that's how it's supposed to be spelled

Zinger. Or Ding Dong. Or whatever snack cake you prefer.

And to show they are magnanimous as well as media mercenaries, the @MoonPie folks reached out to Kaela to offer her a prize pack after the social media response became overwhelming. There were hundreds of thousands of likes, retweets and replies on various accounts.

It was clear-cut. A Tyson-esque first-round TKO to the point that Kaela's last Tweet was "Note to self: don't mess with @MoonPie" on Sunday.

Just to be safe, maybe she should avoid RC Cola, too.
