No U.S. taxes for foreign abortions

It is appalling that any U.S. tax dollars would be used to end the lives of unborn babies through abortion in this country. And so it is even more obvious that American taxpayers should never be forced to subsidize abortions in foreign nations.

Preventing that misuse of U.S. tax revenue is the goal of a measure in the House of Representatives. It would deny federal money to foreign so-called "family-planning" organizations that perform abortions or advise clients how to obtain them.

"Every human life is precious, and sacred and worthy of respect," said Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J. "No one, I say again, no one is expendable. Thus, family-planning funds ... cannot be allowed to be the Trojan horse for a global abortion industry."

Republican presidents stretching back to Ronald Reagan have properly banned U.S. funding for foreign organizations that perform or promote abortions. But when Democrat presidents, including Barack Obama, have been in office, they have reversed that ban.

We see absolutely no provision in the Constitution that can be construed in such a way as to permit federal funding for domestic abortions, and neither can we find one that permits U.S. taxpayer funding for foreign abortions.

The ban on taxpayer funding of overseas abortions deserves overwhelming support by Congress.
