East Ridge's odd designation of birthdays as 'holidays'

We don't know too many people who consider their birthdays a "holiday" in the traditional sense. So it's odd that the city of East Ridge has decided that in addition to a 3 percent raise, its 117 employees will get to add their birthdays to the list of paid holidays.

That brings the city's paid-holiday list to 11 -- the most of any city in Hamilton County, and three more than the average private-sector worker gets.

East Ridge isn't the only employer that counts birthdays as holidays. But that doesn't make it sound policy -- especially when tax dollars are involved.
