Honor Flight of Middle Tennessee takes veterans on trip to remember

September 2015 marked the 15th flight to Washington, D.C., by the Honor Flight of Middle Tennessee. These free flights are for terminally ill, World War II- and Korean War-era veterans.

A bus picks up veterans in Winchester, Tullahoma and Manchester, Tenn., and is accompanied by a military honor guard to the Nashville airport, where another honor guard welcomes veterans.

In Washington, D.C., we visit the WWII Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Changing of the Guard, Marine Corps Memorial, Air Force Memorial and the 911 Memorial.

Each veteran receives an Honor Flight ball cap and polo shirt. We provide wheelchairs and at least one doctor and two nurses on board each flight. We end our Washington visit with a meal at Fort Meade, Md., then head back to the airport and home.

Sergeant Major (E-9) Larry E. Williams, U.S. Army/retired
