Ruth Holmberg honor will bear her name

It is fitting that the ArtsBuild Arts Leadership Award, presented for the first time Tuesday to Ruth Holmberg, will hereafter be named the Ruth Holmberg Arts Leadership Award.

"When we decided to establish this award, there was really no debate over who should be the first recipient," said Dan Bowers, president of ArtsBuild, formerly Allied Arts.

Holmberg served as publisher of The Chattanooga Times from 1964 to 1992. Her leadership positions in the arts include former chairwoman of the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Association and the Hunter Museum of American Art and founding member of the Tennessee Arts Commission.

To say she is deserving of the honor is a grand understatement.

With the new award name, ArtsBuild each year forward will again recognize Holmberg for "her extraordinary support of the arts and cultural community in Chattanooga over the past 68 years."

At the same time, the organization will honor new recipients for following her lead.

What a grand example she has provided.
