Tempers flare over who's 'in loop' as Red Bank commissioners meet

An argument between officials disrupted the otherwise routine Tuesday evening Red Bank Board of Commissioners meeting.

Vice Mayor Monty Millard criticized his colleagues for failing to tell him and Commissioner Floy Pierce about two recent community events.

He said Mayor Joe Glasscock told him about a park opening ceremony at East Midvale Avenue about an hour before it started. And no one told him about a political rally for Hamilton County Commissioner Fred Skillern, he added.

"We talk about trying to work together and do things together," Mr. Millard said. "If we could all do a better job and make sure all five commissioners get more advance notice, we would be more than happy to participate."

Mr. Glasscock said he would "take the heat" for the park dispute, blaming a faulty fax machine and other complications. But he quickly turned against the commissioners about the other matter.

"The Skillern affair was announced at a public meeting that we had at the Community Center two meetings ago," he said. "I remember that very distinctly, so perhaps somebody's not paying attention.

"Nobody's trying to keep anybody out of the loop."

At that point, even some Red Bank High School students watching the meeting stopped all outside conversation.

"I don't know why you all were not invited," said Commissioner Ruth Jeno, referring to the political rally. "It was just word-of-mouth, so that's how I got involved."

In regular business, commissioners amended the city's budget to purchase five new police cars at a cost of $124,500.
