Trump to name Nashville's Bill Hagerty ambassador to Japan

Nashville businessman Bill Hagerty is President-elect Donald Trump's choice to be ambassador of Japan, according to a source close to the transition team.

Hagerty, former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, currently works in private equity at Hagerty Peterson and Company LLC, which he founded. He's been rumored to be a potential Republican candidate for governor of Tennessee in 2018.

Following Trump's election victory in November, Hagerty served as director of presidential appointments in Trump's transition. His name had been floated as a possible pick for Trump's U.S. Trade representative.
