The only reason I'm not picking Shovels & Rope is because I've seen them several times. The last time was July in Louisville, Ky., at Forecastle when Cary Ann Hearst was about 10 1/2 months pregnant. She and husband Michael Trent were great as ever. If you haven't seen them, you should definitely check them out. They play a stripped down version of country, rock, punk and folk.

I haven't seen Fishbone live, however, and that needs to be remedied. These guys are from Los Angeles and have been playing their special blend of ska, punk, funk and hard rock for more than a quarter century. They'll make you think, laugh, dance and jump around like nobody's watching.

The band was formed in 1979 by brothers Norwood and Phillip Fisher, along with Angelo Moore, Kendal Jones, Walter Kibby II and Christopher Dowd. Norwood Fisher, Moore and Kibby are with the band still. The band is strong; a film called "Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone" was made about their careers and features, among others, Flea, Gwen Stefani, Ice-T and Branford Marsalis.
