Orlando tight end picks UTC

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football team has picked up its 11th commitment for 2010 with just over two weeks to go before national signing day. Orlando, Fla., tight end Faysal Shafaat visited UTC last weekend and committed to the Mocs on Sunday.

The 6-foot-5 Shafaat had a team-high 33 catches this season for Orlando Lutheran Academy, with eight touchdowns and an average of 18 yards per catch, Crusaders assistant head coach Pat Williamson said. That's especially impressive, Williamson said, since the Crusaders run the wing-T.

"He's a heck of an athlete," Williamson said. "He needs work on his blocking, but his hands and route running and all that stuff are just phenomenal."

Shafaat, named to the Orlando Sentinel's All-Orange County second team as a tight end, also played defensive end and, according to Williamson, led the state with 20 sacks.

Despite being in the middle of basketball season -- he's an all-conference forward -- Williamson said Shafaat has put on about 10 pounds in the past month to get up to 230.

"He's going to be able to put on a lot more weight in the next few years," Williamson said, "and I think he's going to be a great player up there."
