UTC golfers win Palmetto tourney

The Lady Mocs finish eighth in Jacksonville, but de Groot is second and Loza ties for seventh.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team now has won the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament at Aiken, S.C., both times it's participated.

The Mocs repeated their 2008 win Tuesday. Shooting a final-round 293, UTC finished at 855 with 19th-ranked Clemson second at 862 out of 18 teams.

Stephan Jaeger tied for fourth individually at 210, and UTC teammates Derek Rende and Steven Fox finished eighth at 212 and tied for 10th at 214, respectively. Fredrik Qvicker tied for 19th at 219.

"Going into the event, I felt our chemistry was really coming together," Mocs coach Mark Guhne said in a UTC release. "It was a great team win. We need to build on this result and continue to get better."

The Lady Mocs finished eighth, meanwhile, in the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational at Jacksonville, Fla., but Emma de Groot was the individual runner-up at 217 and Maria Juliana Loza tied for seventh at 224. Moa Duf tied for 50th at 234.

n The Lee men's team finished third out of 17 teams in the Rome News-Tribune Invitational at Stonebridge Golf Club with a 581, trailing John A. Logan (574) and Shorter (579).

Lee's JB Eksteen tied for fourth and made the all-tournament team with a 36-hole 141, and Taylor Huse and Tyler Smith tied for 18th at 147 with Jeremy Lawson at 148 and Sam Bedwell at 150. Hixson residents Nick Carden and Richard Powell shot 153 and 156 for 13th-place King.

n Covenant's men tied for fourth out of 11 teams in the Piedmont Invitational at The Orchard in Clarkesville, Ga. Led by fifth-place, all-tournament member David Spencer with a 153, the Scots shot 642. Trevor Potts and Anthony Sligh shot 161 and 162. North Georgia won by 16 strokes at 215.

The Lady Scots' Jordan Agate was 13th out of 46 in the women's tournament at 177.
