Lady Mocs tied for 13th in East Regional

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team is tied for 13th after the first round of the NCAA East Regional.

The 12th-seeded Lady Mocs combined Thursday to shoot a 5-over-par 293 at Ironwood Country Club in Wilmington, N.C. They were led by junior Emma de Groot's 1-under 71 -- the first sub-par NCAA postseason round ever for a Lady Moc.

The top eight teams after three rounds will advance to the NCAA championships, and UTC is eight shots off that mark.

Auburn leads at 8-under 280, and Pepperdine is one shot back. South Carolina and Tennessee are tied for third at 283, Florida is fifth at 284 and there is a three-way tie for sixth at 285.

East Tennessee State sophomore Nina Muehl leads the individuals after an 8-under 64, which she accomplished with eight birdies including a chip-in.

De Groot, the Southern Conference golfer of the month for March and April, is tied for 20th after making six birdies and five bogeys. Junior Christine Wolf shot a 72, sophomore Maria Juliana Loza shot a 74 and senior Katie Taylor added a 76.

The Lady Mocs, who are tied with East Carolina, are competing with only four golfers due to the departure of Sweden's Moa Duf, who suffered from homesickness after the SoCon championship.

In the Central Regional, former Baylor golfer Sara Grantham shot a 6-over 78 for Ole Miss, which is tied for eighth. In the West Regional, Baylor alum Brooke Pancake had the drop score, a 76, for Alabama, which is tied for 13th.
