University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Steven Fox shot a 5-under-par 67 at Council Fire Golf Club to earn medalist honors in a Tennessee State Open qualifier on Monday. Local amateur Steve Johnson finished second at 72, and UTC assistant coach Ben Rickett advanced with a 75, as did Knoxville pro Randy Wylie and amateur Chris Schmidt. UTC junior Stephan Jaeger qualified for the State Open as well by shooting a 76 in the Knoxville-area qualifier that former Baylor golfer Ryan Thornton won with a 2-under 70. The State Open will be played May 9-12 at Brentwood Country Club.
INDIANAPOLIS - The Lee University men's golf team is tied with league rival Shorter for third place in the NAIA Brickyard Classic after Monday's round. Malone and Johnson & Wales shot 296s to share the lead, and the Flames and Hawks shot 301s. JB Eksteen led Lee with a 73, and Tyler Smith shot a 74 with Caleb Robinson and Jeremy Lawson carding 77s. Sam Bedwell, returning from a knee injury, had a 78.
NIOTA, Tenn. - Host Tennessee Wesleyan is winning the TWC Invitational men's golf tournament after Monday's first round at Springbrook. The Bulldogs shot 295 with Michael Alread and Tyler Smith registering 73s and Wesley Farris, Zach Cole and Casey Flenniken coming in at 74, 75 and 76. Milligan is second at 299 in the nine-team tournament, with another Wesleyan team sixth at 312 (led by Hunter Dees' 76) and Bryan seventh at 317 with Dean Hoare shooting a 73.
