Mocs show progress in Hokies scrimmage

John Shulman sounded much more pleased with his basketball team while riding back from a scrimmage at Virginia Tech than he did following a Tuesday exhibition win over Tennessee Wesleyan.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga competed in a three-hour closed scrimmage against the Hokies on Saturday in which only team personnel were allowed to witness.

"We were a much different team today than we were on Tuesday and that was encouraging," Shulman said. "We were much better defensively and we were still unselfish offensively."

Shulman called Saturday's scrimmage a step in the right direction along a long path to the Southern Conference tournament.

"We ran our stuff, we were comfortable, and we got better as the day went on," he said. "We made leaps and bounds of progress from Tuesday to today."

The Mocs will attend church together this morning and watch video clips of the scrimmage in the afternoon. They will practice Monday, take Tuesday off, then begin preparing for Indiana on Wednesday.

"If we keep making progress, then we'll have a chance," Shulman said. "I told them today that we've got a chance. Some teams don't have a chance."
