Signing day busy for UTC teams

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga coaches John Shulman, Wes Moore, Mark Guhne and Frank Reed received a handful of national letters of intent on Wednesday.

Shulman, the men's basketball coach, received papers from 6-foot-7 Joshu'a Warren who is playing this season at Fishbourne Academy.

"He's as athletic as anybody we've seen, way more so than [Nicchaeus] Doaks, and we found out he's from Marietta, but he slipped through everybody," Shulman said. "He's going to give us some much-needed athleticism and a presence inside. He's an incredible athlete with a body and his skills will get there."

Papers from point guard Farad Cobb and forward GerVaughn McGhee are expected to arrive Thursday or Friday.

Casey Jones, who gave a verbal commitment to UTC, will not sign this week.

"Honestly, it's just that I'm not ready to sign," Jones texted. "I just really want to tame my time with this. It's one big decision that will change my life forever, and I realized nothing's wrong with taking my time.

"UTC is No. 1 on my short list of schools I like."

Moore, the women's basketball coach, signed a pair of highly-rated guards.

Shooting guard Tatianna Jackson of The Lovett School in Atlanta is rated a four-star prospect by ESPN HoopGurlz and point guard Alicia Payne of White Station High School in Memphis is a three-star player.

"We've probably had some kids that we've gotten that kind of flew under the radar a little bit, but definitely a four-star and a three-star, I don't know that we've been there before," Lady Mocs coach Wes Moore said. "It's exciting to finally get them officially in the family [after they committed in September]."

The 5-foot-10 Jackson was named honorable mention Class AA all-state last season by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution after averaging 17.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Payne is a 5-7 true point guard who averaged 3.9 assists and more than three steals a game last season.

Also joining the team next season will be Appalachian State transfer Ashlen Dewart, the younger sister of former Lady Mocs player Bailey Dewart.

Dewart, a 6-3 All-Southern Conference forward last season at App State, is already in school and practicing, but has to sit out a season after transferring.

Guhne, the men's golf coach, received papers from three of Tennessee's top junior golfers: Michael Monroe of Independence High School, Kory Webb of the Christian Academy of Knoxville and Wes Gosselin of Hardin Valley High School.

"It's definitely the highest ranked class we've brought in here, and to have all three from Tennessee is really cool," Guhne said. "I'm extremely pleased, plus they're all exceptional students and I think all three have a chance to play next year even though we're only losing [Stephan] Jaeger."

UTC softball received scholarship papers from pitcher Rachel Albritton of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; pitcher Kaisey Carson of Indianapolis; catcher Anyssa Robles of Hoschton, Ga.; outfielder Amanda Ross of Torrance, Calif.; and infielder Alyssa Taylor of Orange, Calif.

"The group of student-athletes that makes up our 2012 signing class is going to help the program reach new levels," Reed said in a release. "They are a very diverse group that satisfies a lot of positions."

UTC volleyball coach Travis Filar is expected to announce his signees later this week.
