Freshman Cheek leaves Lady Mocs

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Kelsee Cheek has left school and returned home, women's basketball coach Wes Moore said.

The 5-foot-11 guard from Concord, N.C., was homesick, Moore said, and also questioned whether she liked basketball enough to play in college.

"In college you step it up as far as commitment and work that's required of you, and that was a struggle for her," he said.

Cheek averaged more than 20 points per game for Jay M. Robinson High School last season and was the South Piedmont Conference player of the year. She is the one of several players Moore has signed in recent years who later decided that they'd had enough.

"I've made a conscious effort to tell them what a typical day might be like," he said, chronicling the mental and physical demands. "Sometimes you just decide that this isn't what you want to do, and that's what Kelsee was telling me: She just really doesn't want to play basketball anymore."

After four weeks of individual workouts, the Lady Mocs begin practice Monday.
