UTC's Sauzon golfer of month

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore Agathe Sauzon from Valence, France, was the Southern Conference women's golfer of the month for April, when she had two top-10 finishes in tournaments in her first semester with the program. She was the individual winner in a playoff in the SoCon tournament as the Mocs won their fourth consecutive league title.

Baseball

• The Tennessee Wesleyan College baseball team blasted its way Friday to the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament championship at Kingsport, Tenn., with 8-1 and 10-1 wins over Reinhardt and Virginia Intermont. Wesleyan (43-16), ranked eighth in the NAIA after winning the national title last year, won the AAC regular season by 6 1/2 games and is 24-4 this season in AAC play. But the Bulldogs lost 11-4 to Reinhardt in Thursday's late game after beating the same Eagles 4-2 on Wednesday.

• The Lee University baseball team belted William Carey 11-5 on Friday in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament in Columbus, Ga., and is scheduled to play nationally second-ranked Faulkner today for the championship. Lee is ranked No. 4 in the NAIA.

• Chattanooga State rallied from a sizable early deficit but lost 7-6 to host Volunteer State in the four-team TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII baseball tournament Friday at Gallatin, Tenn.

Softball

• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior second baseman Sara Poteat made the Capital One Academic All-District 3 first team for 2013, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America. This is a repeat selection for the Thomaston, Ga., resident. Going into the Lady Mocs' last regular-season series of the season, this weekend at Elon, Poteat is batting .335 with team highs of 56 hits and 17 stolen bases, and she is graduating today as an exercise science major with a 3.8 grade point average. The all-district team also included Tennessee's Ellen Renfroe, Raven Chavanne and Madison Shipman. Five players from area colleges were included on the District 4 college division team: Tennessee Wesleyan's Lindsey Arndts from Ten Mile (3.90) and Brooke Ward from Soddy-Daisy (3.78), Bryan College's Jill Davis from Decatur (3.88) and Kateline Vaughn from Rocky Face (3.65) and Lee's Laurel Allen from Cleveland (3.44).

• Lee University edged Belhaven 3-2 and beat Spring Hill 5-1 on Friday in the SSAC softball tournament at Columbus, Ga., and awaits the losers-bracket survivor in the championship game today. Meghan Macias hit a bases-loaded two-run single in the seventh inning to lift the Lady Flames (43-9) past the Mississippi team and give Angie Hughes (17-2) the pitching win in relief of Caroline MacAusland. Ana Coscorrosa had a two-run double and an RBI single against Spring Hill, and Amanda Lynn had two hits and scored twice behind pitchers Jessa Watts (6-2), Katie Deems and MacAusland.

• Chattanooga State lost 6-3 to Columbia State in the first day of the four-team TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII softball tournament at Gallatin, Tenn., and is scheduled to play host Volunteer State today at 4 EDT, weather permitting. Beth Breeden hit a two-run homer and Marina Wilkerson was 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Lady Tigers. Top-seeded Walters State beat Vol State 4-2.

Golf

• Lee University recently signed two Georgians for its men's golf team: Shea Sylvester from Roswell and Centennial High School and Adam Wright from Marietta and Lassiter High. "Adam Wright is an all-around great addition to our program," Flames coach John Maupin said in a Lee release. "Adam has had some excellent results over the past couple of years, including his top-five finish at the Georgia Junior Am. ... He is also an excellent student and will be a great ambassador for Lee University." Wright won an SJGT junior tournament in 2012 and finished third in the Atlanta Junior Classic and fourth in the Georgia Junior and the SJGT Georgia Club Junior, and he led Lassiter to a fourth-place state finish. Sylvester won the Atlanta Junior Grand and three SJGT tournaments in 2008-09 and two other junior tour tournaments the next two years and the HJGT Chateau Elan last November. "Shea is a great pickup for our program," Maupin said. "He has extensive experience in top-level junior golf events, and he has proven that he is capable of shooting some low tournament rounds."

• King College senior Richard Powell from Notre Dame High School qualified as an individual for the NCAA Division II South-Southeast Regional golf tournament Monday through Wednesday at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The first King men's golfer to qualify for NCAA championship play, he had a team-best 73.5 stroke average this season.
