KNOXVILLE -- One of the first orders of business for Rick Barnes as Tennessee's new basketball coach is filling the roles on his coaching staff.

It's a process through which the former Texas coach is continuing to sort.

Barnes indicated during his introduction Tuesday he would bring a couple of assistant coaches with him from Texas, but he had not finalized any decisions.

By the end of the day Wednesday, the only decisions Barnes had made concerned some of the holdovers from former coach Donnie Tyndall's staff.

Five staffers -- assistant coach Beau Braden, director of player development J.T. Burton, basketball operations director Justin Phelps, strength and conditioning coach Todd Moyer and video coordinator Ty Proffitt -- won't be retained, a Tennessee spokesman confirmed.

Al Pinkins and Chris Shumate, two of Tyndall's assistants, remain possibilities to stay on Barnes's staff after interviewing with Barnes on Wednesday.

Pinkins came to Tennessee, which paid $51,000 to search firm Collegiate Sports Associates for its services in helping the Volunteers land Barnes, after a stint as an assistant under Andy Kennedy at Ole Miss, while Shumate worked at Cincinnati under Mick Cronin before joining Tyndall's staff for his second season at Southern Mississippi in 2013-14.

As for Barnes's former assistant coaches at Texas, Russell Springmann was on Barnes's staff in some capacity for the entirety of his tenure, Chris Odgen joined the staff in 2003 and moved his way up to a full-time assistant role and Rob Lanier rejoined Barnes's staff for a second stint in 2011 after stops at Siena as a head coach and Virginia and Florida as an assistant.

The 34-year-old Ogden, who played for Barnes at Texas, likely will be on Tennessee's new staff. He changed the profile picture on his Twitter account to a photo of former Tennessee All-Americans Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King and tweeted the lyrics to "Rocky Top" on Tuesday. Ogden became a full-time assistant at Texas in 2008.

Lanier, Barnes's lead assistant, may be in play to remain in Austin if Texas lands VCU coach Shaka Smart to replace Barnes. Lanier and Smart spent one season (2008-09) together on Billy Donovan's staff at Florida. He guided Siena to one NCAA tournament and one NIT in four years as the head coach there (2001-05).

Barnes likely will have to find a strength coach, operations director and video coordinator for his Tennessee staff, too.

"I have some assistant coaches that I will bring with me," he said Tuesday. "I haven't finalized any of that yet. ... Obviously I've been in contact with some of my assistants back (at Texas). I did have the chance to meet the assistants here today.

"I'm hoping to get that in place as quickly as I can."
