Tigers win series with No. 4 Walters

Chattanooga State beat nationally fourth-ranked Walters State twice Saturday in TCCAA baseball, 9-1 and 3-2, but lost 6-0 in the series finale Sunday.

Austin Hutchison pitched a five-hitter and Michael Goss was 2-for-2 with four RBIs in the first win Saturday for the Tigers (22-9, 12-6), and Noah Karst and Michael Halley each had two hits and one RBI and combined to score three runs.

Nick Mason (5-0) was the winning pitcher and Andy Clay got the save in the second game, when Halley and David Mayo had RBIs and Ben Young was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored for Chattanooga State. Ross Grosvenor hit his 15th home run of the season for Walters (39-7, 18-3).

Grosvenor was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI on Sunday, when Jarrett Hood was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs and Jake Usher and two relievers pitched a one-hitter for the Senators. Tigers starting pitcher Zach Thompson allowed only two runs and struck out seven in his six innings.

* Columbia State 8, Cleveland State 3: At Cleveland, the TCCAA's second-place Chargers broke a tie with a five-run eighth inning featuring Chase Carder's two-run homer. Nick Walker was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Ryan Kemp was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Columbia State (27-13, 16-5).

Chris Caffrey batted in two runs for the Cougars (19-17, 6-14) with a homer and a sacrifice fly. Jammer Strickland was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

* Lee 3, North Alabama 1: At Florence, Ala., the Flames completed the Gulf South Conference series sweep as M.J. Brown hit a three-run homer in the second inning and Jacob Potts, Grayson Bailey and Ridge Ackerman combined to pitch a seven-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Lee (23-15-1, 13-12-1) had only four hits.

* Tennessee Wesleyan 12, Milligan 2: At Athens, Tenn., Cody Albright and Brandon Landrie combined to pitch a six-hitter and Dillon Dove and three relievers followed with a three-hitter as the NAIA's 10th-ranked Bulldogs rose to 33-9 overall and 17-4 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with the defeat of the Buffaloes and a 17-3 makeup win over Montreat.

Ridge Hoopi-Haslam was 4-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs, Brad Carpenter was 4-for-5, Cody Hiefnar hit a three-run homer and Cody Stroud scored three times against Milligan. Hoopi-Haslam and Jordan Garrett each had three hits and four RBIs against Montreat, when Carpenter, Wardy Polanco and Shell McCain each had two hits and three runs scored and combined for five RBIs and Hiefnar and Stroud had two hits and an RBI apiece.

* Millsaps 6-6, Sewanee 5-8: At Sewanee, Jackson Cooper was 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored as the host Tigers won the game not counting in the conference standings after falling by one in the Southern Athletic Association matchup. William Chenoweth was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Millsaps (25-7, 15-3) in the finale after homering along with Keith Shumaker (three RBIs) in Sunday's first game.

Cooper was 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, two RBIs and two runs in the loss for Sewanee (10-21, 3-15), and Tony Dykes, Ben Clune and Derek Hullings each had two hits and either an RBI or a run.
