Tosh Lupoi to coach Alabama's outside linebackers

Tosh Lupoi, an analyst on Alabama's coaching staff this past football season, was promoted Monday to outside linebackers coach.

Lupoi is replacing Lance Thompson, who left this month to become linebackers coach at Auburn.

"We are happy to have Tosh on board as a full-time assistant coach," Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said in a release. "Tosh has impressed me during his time here over the course of last year, and he will be a great addition to our defensive staff. He's a high-energy guy, and we feel like he will be able to contribute some new ideas both as a coach on the field as well as his role as in recruiting."

Before coming to Alabama, Lupoi was Washington's defensive line coach and defensive running-game coordinator during the 2012-13 seasons. The Huskies ranked fourth in the country in sacks per game (3.15) in 2013, and they ranked among the top four in the Pac-12 both years in scoring defense.

Lupoi played at California from 2000 to 2005, leading the Bears in tackles in 2003 and earning all-conference honors in 2005. He became the youngest full-time assistant coach in Cal history in 2008, when he joined the staff as a 26-year-old.

"This is an incredible opportunity," Lupoi said. "I'm extremely fortunate to join the best college football organization in the country. Fresh off our 24th SEC championship, playoff appearance and pursing another top-rated signing class, it's an exciting time at Alabama right now."
