UTC women's golfers second out of 19 teams and more Chattanooga region sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team finished second Tuesday to East Carolina, 857 to 863, in the 19-team Pinehurst Challenge at the Pinehurst No. 1 course in North Carolina. UTC shot even-par 288 for the team's sixth round in a row this fall of even or better. Monica San Juan and Isabella Loza had 70s Tuesday, and San Juan tied for ninth individually at 213. Emily McLennan tied for 20th at 218, and Loza, Cris Perez and Megan Woods shot 219, 219 and 220.

* The UTC men's golfers finished sixth out of 14 teams Tuesday in the AutoTrader.com Collegiate tournament at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga., with Andrew Weathers and Wes Gosselin tying for 10th and 16th individually at 215 and 216. Gosselin shot a final-round 69. Lipscomb was the top team at 839, South Florida was second at 847 and Troy was third at 864, only five shots better than UTC. The Mocs' third and fourth best scorers were Stuart Thomas at 220 and Brooks Thomas at 225.

* The Dalton State women's golfers shared the championship of the Thomas University Invitational in Valdosta, Ga., with SCAD Savannah after both teams finished the 36-hole tournament Tuesday at 613. Dalton State's Katie Dalton was the individual runner-up at 149, and Erika Wardzinski at 153 and Julia McQuilken at 155 tied for fifth and 11th. Caroline Griffin and Rachel Rebne shared 18th place at 159.

* The Sewanee women's golf team finished one shot behind winner Texas-Tyler and the Tigers' Emily Javadi from Chattanooga finished one shot behind medalist Laura Lindsey from Tyler in the GolfWeek Fall Invitational loaded with NCAA Division III top-20 teams at Miramar Beach, Fla. Javadi had the day's low round Sunday and Tuesday in her 219, almost erasing Lindsey's five-shot lead. Sewanee's Meghan Symonds was 13th at 235, and Sophia Morrill and Alison Eleey were 21st and tied for 29th at 239 and 241.

* Covenant College finished sixth out of 10 men's golf teams in The Buccaneer hosted by Christian Brothers University in Southaven, Miss. The Scots passed two teams Tuesday, with Alan Craig and Jeron Pasma shooting 75s. Craig was 29th at 236, Marshall Kent tied for 31st at 240 and Pasma shot 245.

Volleyball

* Covenant College took sole possession of first place in the USA South volleyball South Division standings with a 3-0 victory Tuesday over visiting Maryville. In its first win in five years against the other Lady Scots (10-8, 7-2), Covenant (10-9, 8-1) scored the first 12 points and rolled 25-12, 25-15, 25-23 as Chelsea VanDyk had 13 kills on a .722 attack percentage, Ginny Moore had 12 kills and 16 digs and Schuyler Moore had 26 assists.

* The Lee University volleyball team lost 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 29-27, 25-15) at Division III power Emory (22-2) on Tuesday, Catherine Conley and Brooke Wilsman had 10 kills apiece and Hillary Hoffpauir had 22 assists for Lee (8-8).

* Bryan College won 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-21) in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball against Truett-McConnell on Tuesday. Bryan's Kara Stamper was the AAC attacker of the week, and Shelby Grace Enochs was the setter of the week. Stamper had a 16-kill match and three with 14 while Enochs totaled 150 assists and 44 digs in the four matches, with 49 assists in one. The Lady Lions are 16-13, 11-1 in the AAC.

Soccer

* The Bryan men's soccer team won 2-0 Tuesday at Tennessee Wesleyan, lifting the Lions to 7-4-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the AAC, a half-game behind first-place Union College. TWC is 6-6-1, 3-3-1.

* Lee University's David Perez from Northwest Whitfield High School was selected the Gulf South Conference men's soccer player of the week for the second time in a row and the fourth time this season, and the Flames (8-2-2, 3-0-1) climbed to No. 15 in the NSCAA poll for NCAA Division II. Perez had two goals in a 5-1 win over the Alabama-Huntsville team tha previously was 5-0 in the GSC, and he assisted on the Flames' score in a 1-1 tie with West Alabama. He leads the GSC with 12 goals.

* Sewanee's Elizabeth Eidson was chosen the Southern Athletic Association women's soccer defensive player of the week after the Tigers extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches with a 21-4 goal differential. They allowed only one goal in 185 minutes this past weekend. "I am happy for Eddie. She has been a key contributor to our success this past month," coach Patrick Johnston said in a school release. "That being said, our entire defense continues to play well. This award could have also gone to Baker (Walls) or Martha (Dinwiddie). All three ladies had a great weekend against two of the better offenses in the SAA."

Running

* Dalton State's Emily Poole for the third time this season and Spencer Head for the second time are the Southern States Athletic Conference cross country runners of the week. Head was the men's honoree after finishing second out of 201 runners at the Royals Challenge in Charlotte, N.C., and Poole was eighth out of 206 women's participants.
