Sewanee lacrosse players Robbie Berndt and Carson Liles were the offensive player and newcomer of the year, respectively, in the Southern Athletic Association this spring, and now they are the first Tigers to be chosen USILA/Nike All-Americans. Berndt had 36 goals and 11 assists and a league-best 21 goals in conference play in 2016, when Albany transfer Liles won 104 of 170 face-offs. He won 10 of 16 in the loss to Washington & Lee in the NCAA tournament. Sewanee was 12-4, 7-0 in the SAA, and won the league title for the second year in a row.

Baseball

* The second-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan baseball team advanced in the NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho, with a 9-3 victory over No. 3 seed Bellevue from Nebraska on Monday. The Bulldogs (50-13) are scheduled to play top seed Faulkner or host and defending champion Lewis-Clark State at 9:30 tonight EDT. Sully Rios Reyes capped a three-run second inning for the Bulldogs with a two-run home run, and he and Alfred Cruz scored on a Pedro Barrios double in the fourth. TWC pitcher Tyler Thornton allowed three hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings, leaving with his team up 7-0. After Bellevue (52-11) scored two runs on a Trevor Jones double off Reed Bright in the eighth, the Bulldogs got two right back on an Omar Gomez single. Gomez was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Barrios, Cody Stroud and Malik Stephens each had two hits as well. Cruz batted in two runs. Earlier Monday, Sterling edged The Master's 9-7 and Lindsey Wilson outlasted Auburn-Montgomery 15-12 in elimination games.

Auto Racing

* Ron Lane double-entered his first competition this year at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip and wound up first and second in the Super Pro class in his new 640 Chevrolet Miller dragster. The owner of Ron's Classic Cars in Soddy-Daisy won with a 4.56-second run on a 4.56 dial in defeating 40 cars and winning $3,500. Richie Nesbitt of Calhoun, Ga., was third with a 6.70 run on a 6.69 dial in his 1982 Corvette Sting Ray. Charles McRae of LaFayette won the No Box class with a 9.44 on a 9.43 in a 1983 Mustang convertible, with Zoomie Zumstein of Harrison second in a 1965 Valiant. Cole Grayson of Dunlap was the Junior Dragster winner with Khloe Wilson from Flintstone second. Kevin Rodden of Cleveland had the fastest time of the meet at 4.50 seconds and 151.97 mph.

Golf

* The Georgia Northwestern men's golf team is preparing for a long trip back to western New York and the Chautauqua Golf Course for next week's NJCAA Division III national tournament. The Bobcats are returning with two 2015 first-team All-Americans and two other sophomores who helped them finish third last year, and they have added a capable freshman in Tucker Venable from East Hamilton. Jordan Estes from Ringgold High and Chase Cole from Dade County - both headed to Dalton State's NAIA program - were third and fourth individually in the 2015 nationals with 72-hole totals of 296 and 299 - and Lanier Guest from Gordon Lee shot 311 with Grant Allen from Heritage at 323. Cincinnati State was the 2015 Division III champion by two strokes over Sandhills from North Carolina, which also has two returning All-Americans, and Cincinnati State is not part of the 12-team tournament. "We were a little out of our element (last year), but that won't be the case this year," GNTC coach Jared Willerson said in a school release. "We know how to get there, where we are supposed to go, where to eat, what the schedule is going to be like and what we need to do."

Softball

* Local ProStar Fastpitch softball player Rayanna "R.J." Janke is one of the promising amateurs invited to the inaugural Select 30 All American Camp being held Aug. 19-21 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in conjunction with the 2016 National Pro Fastpitch Championship Series. The pro tournament will run Aug. 19-23. The camp is for girls identified by USA Elite Select as top players in the 2017-22 high school graduation classes. The event will begin with nearly 600 players and will cut down that Sunday to 30 in each age group, and each set of 30 will be divided into two teams for a seven-inning showcase game. All the participants will receive tickets to the NPF games and get to interact with the pros.
