Around the Region: Covenant twins named All-USA South in volleyball

Covenant College twins Ginny and Schuyler Moore - juniors from Fort Myers, Fla. - were on the All-USA South volleyball team announced Thursday, while teammates Morgan Opgenorth and Jessica Seehorn made the All-USAS West second team. The Moores, also first-team All-West along with Piedmont's Amanda Trotter and Haley Hixon from Heritage High in Ringgold, are all-conference for the third year in a row. Ginny Moore finished with 340 kills, fourth in the USAS, and another team high with 418 digs. She had 16 double-doubles this season. Setter Schuyler Moore had 1,025 assists, 355 digs and 118 kills with 19 double-doubles and nine matches of 40 or more assists. Opgenorth, a senior playing just her second year of college volleyball had 169 kills and was in on 64 blocks, while Seehorn had 226 kills and 252 digs. She's a junior from Christian Heritage in Dalton. Sophomore Hannah Harris was the Lady Scots' all-sportsmanship representative. Piedmont sophomore Hixon was the USAS libero of the year with 544 digs, 5.33 per set, and 54 service aces. Trotter is a senior middle blocker with more than 200 kills and a .296 hitting percentage this season.

- Dalton State won 3-0 in Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball Thursday night at Brewton-Parker, by the set scores of 25-13, 25-12, 25-17. The Roadrunners (9-16, 8-10) continue their regular-season-ending road trip tonight at Coastal Georgia (22-7, 15-3) and Saturday at Middle Georgia.

Basketball

- Tennessee Wesleyan University opened its men's basketball season Thursday night with a 92-68 loss to Saint Thomas in Union College's tournament in Barbourville, Ky. Raheem Bowman had 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field and 13 rebounds in leading the Florida school, ranked 15th in the NAIA, and Tim Sada added 19 points with six 3-point baskets. Jordan Hall and Kobe Foster led TWU with 14 and 13 points, while Lenny Pradia had five assists.

- The Lee University women's basketball team won 52-44 in an exhibition game Thursday night at Memphis. Led by Erin Walsh with 12 points, 10 Lady Flames scored in the NCAA Division II program's first ever victory against a Division I team. Maddie Long had nine points and seven rebounds and Haley Cornellison and Shelby Brown scored eight points apiece for Lee, which hosts NAIA member Bryan in another exhibition at noon Saturday.
