Former Cleveland High School and Carson-Newman basketball standout Ish Sanders was named to the Big V league's All-Star Five, making him one of the five top players in the Australian professional league. Sanders scored at last 20 points in all but two of the games in which he played for the Sunbury Jets and was the league's second-leading scorer at 26.3 per game. He also averaged 4.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals. He topped 30 points five times and had 51 (making 9 of 18 3-point shots) on May 28 against Mildura. He also had games with 48 and 45 points on the way to being the league's player of the month in May.

Auto Racing

' Jeremiah Powell of Trenton won the $2,500 top prize in the Super Pro class last Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip with a 5.24-second burst on a 5.23 dial in a 350 Chevrolet small-block dragster built by his father, former strip champion Rocky Powell. Jeremiah's twin, Josh Powell, was third in a 1990 Chevy S10 pickup. Brandon Jones of Sylvania was second with a 5.29 run on a 5.28 dial in a Chevy dragster built by Steven Farrow. Jason Young of Englewood won the Foot Brake class with a 6.92 on a 6.91 in a 1990 Mustang, with Larry Jackson of LaFayette second in a 1972 Plymouth Duster. Jim Bosley and Chris Young were first and second in the 6.00 class, Daniel Stutz and Jake Clayton were first and second in the 7.00, Mark Miles and Greg Trew were first and second in the 5.70, and Bryson Kaiser and Brandon Jones Jr. were first and second in Junior Dragster. Steve Babcock in a Chrysler dragster had the meet's low elapsed time (4.76) and top speed (145.20 mph).

Volleyball

* University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sophomore middle blocker Emily Plumlee was announced Monday as the Southern Conference volleyball defensive player of the week. She had seven block assists and a block solo in a 3-0 win over Wofford and four block assists in a 3-1 defeat of Western Carolina. "Her mentality of constant improvement, discipline at the net and ability as an attacker has been huge for the success of our team this season," coach Travis Filar said in a UTC release.

* Tennessee Wesleyan freshman Alexan Crittenden from Walker Valley High School was the Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball setter of the week after registering 83 assists in a 2-0 week for the Lady Bulldogs. She had 48 in a 3-2 win over Bob Jones and is averaging 7.5 assists per set.

Soccer

* Tennessee Wesleyan junior goalkeeper McKenna Loges was the AAC women's soccer defensive player of the week after registering a shutout against Montreat and making five saves in a 1-1 tie against St. Andrews. She has 43 saves for the season and a .710 goals-against average.

* Covenant College freshman midfielder Jesse Riggs was chosen the USA South men's soccer rookie of the week for his part in two 6-1 league wins. He had a goal and two assists against Huntingdon and a goal and an assist against LaGrange.

Running

* Bryan College senior Tyler Boone repeated as the AAC men's cross country runner of the week after finishing 12th out of 365 runners in the Royals Cross Country Challenge at Charlotte, N.C. Boone's 8-kilometer time was 24:54.

Golf

* Keoni Vidrine won the Chattanooga TPC golf championship recently at Council Fire with a 2-and-1 victory over Oliver Simonsen. Scott Patton won the senior division with a 2-and-1 defeat of Bob Rice in the final.

Boxing

* The Red Bank Boxing Club will begin workouts for the 2016-17 season Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Luken sports building behind Red Bank High School, and anyone interested is encouraged to show up in warm, loose clothing with the expectation of working out.
