University of Tennessee at Chattanooga vice chancellor and athletic director David Blackburn is the new president of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. The first board meeting of his two-year tenure will be on Oct. 16. Blackburn, a longtime administrator at UT's Knoxville campus before coming to UTC, was appointed to the Hall of Fame board in 2013. He follows Rita Sparks from Memphis as president.
Golf
* The Dalton State women's golf team opened 2016-17 play Tuesday with a 291 in the first round of the SCAD Atlanta Fall Invitational at The Oaks in Covington, Ga. The Lady Roadrunners are tied for second with Campbellsville behind the host team, and Faulkner is fourth at 294. Caroline Griffin is tied for fifth individually at 1-under-par 70, and Tia Teiniketo and Isabel Rijos are tied for ninth at 73 with Katie Dalton at 75. The tournament ends today.
Soccer
* Sewanee's Kyle Johnston from Baylor School was chosen the Southern Athletic Association men's soccer offensive player of the week after recording two goals and three assists in the Tigers' 3-0 season start. He was an All-SAA player in 2015.
* Bryan College sophomore Dino Jones was the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer defensive player of the week for his part in the Lions' 3-0 win last week against Cumberlands. With Jones anchoring the back line, the Patriots had no shots on goal and only six shots total, one in the second half.
* Tennessee Wesleyan junior forward Nicole Broderick was the AAC women's soccer offensive player of the week after recording two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Thomas.
* The Bryan women's soccer team lost 3-1 Tuesday night at Berry College. Maggie Midkiff had an assist and two goals for Berry (2-0). Leslie Blackburn scored for Bryan (2-2) in the 88th minute.
* All the scoring was in the second half as Dalton State lost 3-2 at Milligan in women's soccer Tuesday. Adriana Romera of DSC (3-2-1) netted the first two goals, assisted by Rocio Carrizales and Alejandra Salaises.
Volleyball
* Bryan's Kayla Rymer from Bradley Central High School was the AAC volleyball defender of the week and teammate Shelby Enochs was the setter of the week for their part in a 3-2 week that included the Southeastern Challenge tournament. Both are seniors. Rymer had 33 digs in one match and averaged 5.72 per set in the five matches, while Enochs totaled 149 assists with 43 in one win and averaged 8.28 assists per set and also totaled 47 digs and 24 kills. She had 29 assists, 12 kills and nine digs in a league win over Point. Tuesday night at Truett-McConnell, Bryan went 6-4, 2-0 in the AAC, by winning 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-18) with Hannah Smith contributing 14 kills and 15 digs, Enochs setting 33 assists and Rymer making 11 digs.
* Tennessee Wesleyan lost 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) in AAC volleyball. Olivia Fisher had seven kills and Sierra Ingraham and Lauren Applewhite had six apiece for TWU (1-6, 1-1), and Tia Madden and Alexan Crittenden had 12 and 11 assists.
* The all-newcomer Georgia Northwestern volleyball team won 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) Monday night against the Covenant junior varsity on Lookout Mountain, as setter Serena Turner registered 17 assists and Shelby Thompson had 13 digs. Sierra Crew and Kaitlyn Castle led the Lady Bobcats (1-2) with five kills each.
Cross Country
* Dalton State sophomore Emily Poole from Heritage High School in Ringgold picked up where she left off last year as Southern States Athletic Conference women's cross country runner of the week. She won the award four of six times to close her freshman season and got the first one of 2016 for winning the non-NCAA Division I category of the University of Georgia meet. She completed the 5-kilometer course in 18: 56 in pacing the Roadrunners' team win.
* Sewanee's Jackson Goodwin was the SAA men's runner of the week after his 16:38 5k victory Friday in the Covenant meet.
