Around the Region: Lee University runners shine in meet at Furman

The Lee University men's runners finished fourth out of 23 teams overall and second to Mount Olive among non-Division I teams at the Furman Cross Country Classic on Saturday, and the Lee women were third out of 18 teams in the non-DI category with Audrey Smith setting a school record with her second-place finish of 22:04.98 in the 6-kilometer race. Cheyenne Thompson from first-place Montevallo was the non-DI top individual at 21:46.72. Lee's Amy Carpenter was eighth and Blakely Moore, Becca Umbarger and Lily Fell were 17th, 18th and 20th. Furman and Auburn were first and third overall with Clemson fifth in the men's 8k, and Lee's Christian Noble was eighth individually in 25:15.05 with Brandon Raleigh and Seth Eagleson 12th and 13th.

* Shane Wright won the CADAS Run for Recovery 5k on Saturday by more than a minute and a half as he finished in 16 minutes, 40 seconds on the Tennessee Riverwalk. Zoltan Szabo was second in 18:13, and Brittany Schield in 24:11 and Taylor Davidson in 24:37 were the fastest in a group of women finishing 12th through 15th overall.

Soccer

* The Bryan College men's soccer team improved to 4-0 for the season with a 3-1 home win Saturday against previously unbeaten West Virginia Tech, while the Bryan women won 1-0 at Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky., and are now 3-2. Hana Mizoguchi scored with 28 seconds left for the Lady Lions, who were outshot 14-3. Morgana Hardt da Silva got the shutout with five saves. For the Lions, Charlie Clarke scored two goals, assisted by Kevin Roenpage and Jason Ward, and Brad Spooner headed in a pass from Stephen Ricketts.

* Tennessee Wesleyan won 3-1 in men's soccer Saturday at Cumberland in Lebanon, Tenn., as Jordan Jacob scored at 11:01 and 84:09 with O.T. Bah netting the tiebreaker at 58:42 from a Jake McBrayer cross. Kevin Witton assisted on the first goal for TWU (3-0-1), which had a 10-3 edge in shots.

* Tusculum College scored three times in the last eight minutes and edged Lee 4-2 in NCAA Division II men's soccer Saturday night in Cleveland. David Perez scored from a Samaan Williams pass at 4:53 and assisted on a Drew Jackson goal at 34:19 to give the host Flames two one-goal leads. Tyler Linkous headed in a Dallas Dunn cross for the Pioneers at 30:21, and Rocco Menna assisted on scores by Andre De Giorgi and Andreas Kvam at 82:11 and 89:58 with an own goal in between. Tusculum led 23-6 in shots.

* Visiting Piedmont tied the Sewanee men's soccer team 1-1 through two overtimes Saturday, leaving the Tigers 4-0-1 for the season. Cullen Copland scored midway through the first half for Piedmont (2-1-1), from a double assist, and Ben Vaeth equalized eight minutes into the second half. Sewanee had a 25-10 dominance in shots.

* Millsaps' Gabriel Ryce scored in the 89th minute to give the Majors a 2-1 men's soccer victory Saturday night at Covenant. The host Scots (0-3-1) had tied the match seven minutes earlier on a Jesse Riggs goal from a Henry Paris assist off a corner kick. Nico Roth scored in the first half for Millsaps (2-3) from a Matt Crooker assist. The shot count was 15-11 favoring the Majors.

Field Hockey

* The Sewanee field hockey team edged visiting Earlham on Saturday, 2-1. Ceara Caffrey and Sarah Barry scored unassisted goals at the 27:09 and 36:30 marks for the Tigers (2-1), who had an 18-4 margin in shots. Maite Turlings scored at 58:51 for Earlham (2-2).

General

* UTC vice chancellor and athletic director David Blackburn will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.

Fishing

* Ott DeFoe, a Knoxville resident well-known to many fishing followers in the Chattanooga area, takes a 2 1/2-pound lead into the final day of the Plano Bassmaster Elite tournament on the Mississippi Rivier at La Crosse, Wis. DeFoe weighed 16 pounds, 7 ounces of bass Saturday for a three-day total of 51-9. Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., is third at 47-14, and Toyota Bassmaster angler of the year leader Gerald Swindle of Guntersville is 10th.
