Led by medalist S.M. Lee at 138, the NAIA's 11th-ranked Dalton State men's golfers shared the championship of the 12-team Thomas Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Kinderlou Forest in Valdosta, Ga. DSC shot 295-286 to tie 12th-ranked Southeastern (287-294) at 581, and SC-Beaufort was third at 583. No. 7 Coastal Georgia and No. 8 Keiser also were in the field.

* Lee University finished third at 855 in the 14-team Cougar Invitational men's golf tournament hosted Monday and Tuesday by Columbus (Ga.) State at Columbus Country Club. North Alabama won with a 54-hole 845, and Landers was second at 849. Florida Tech was fourth at 857. Lee's Shea Sylvester tied for third place individually and made the all-tournament team, and Corey Sheppard was eighth with Adam Wright moving up into a tie for 16th with a final-round 69.

Auto Racing

* Steve Dowdy of Ringgold won the $2,500 top prize in the Super Pro class Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip with a 5.01-second burst on a 5.01 dial in his new Undercover dragster modifield by a modified 555-cubic-inch big-block Chevrolet engine. Mark Miles of Flintstone was second in his 1958 Corvette convertible. Marty Goldsmith of Ringgold was first with Chattanooga's Melvin Croft second in the Foot Brake class, Goldsmith with a 7.92 run on a 7.92 dial in a 1978 Dodge. Jasper's Miles Walter won the Junior Dragster competition with an 8.63 on an 8.62, while Kaleb Winters was second and Khloe Wilson third. The Motorcycle class had nine entries after a three-year absence and was won by Allen Hitt with fellow Cartersville resident Darryl Johnson second. Taylor Sweeten had the low elapsed time (4.64) and top speed (146.25 mph) in a Ronnie Warnock Chevy dragster.

Volleyball

* Former East Hamilton standout Emma Lenoir, now an outside hitter at Christian Brothers University, has been selected Gulf South Conference volleyball freshman of the week for a third time this season. She registered 53 kills in three matches and also had 28 digs and five blocks. She totaled 24 of her kills in a victory over Lee University. That's the most kills for any of the conference's players in a match this year.

* Hannah Smith had 18 kills and Shelby Enochs set 34 assists as Bryan College beat visiting Point University 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball Tuesday night. Rachel Mosley contributed nine kills and Kayla Rymer had 18 digs for Bryan (11-7, 6-3). Tennessee Wesleyan (5-13, 3-6) lost 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-19) at Bluefield.

Soccer

* The NAIA's 13th-ranked Bryan College men's soccer team edged No. 22 Cumberland University 1-0 on Tuesday at Dayton with Jason Ward's goal from a double-assist by Kevin Roenpage and Jordan Dunstan in the 14th minute of overtime. The Lions (8-0-1) had a 17-14 edge in shots, and Alex Horton had three saves in the shutout.

* The Covenant College men's soccer team lost 2-1 in overtime at Birmingham-Southern on Tuesday, although Covenant's Jesse Riggs began the scoring at 64:25 with an unassisted goal. Spencer Nichols equalized for BSC (7-1) a minute and a half later, and Conner Quiggle scored the winning goal at 92:04 from a Patrick Erickson assist. Jonathan Crossman made six saves for the Scots (1-7-1). The Covenant women's scheduled game at Maryville was postoponed until tonight at 7.

* Zach Birkhead and Max Hawes scored as Sewanee edged visiting Huntingdon in men's soccer Tuesday night, 2-1. All the scoring was in the second half, beginning with Birkhead's netter from a Reid Turner assist at 46:39 for the Tigers (5-4-1). Alpo Sipill assisted on the game-winner at 85:23.

* Sewanee's Mary "Sissy" Frank was the Southern Athletic Association women's soccer defensive player of the week for her performance in the Tigers' 1-0 win Saturday at Berry. Berry's Maggie Midkiff had five goals and two assists for the season going in, but Frank marked her and held her to two shots and no points.
