Around the Region: Dayton's Andy Morgan finishes 7th in Guntersville bass tournament

Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tenn., who has been the FLW Tour angler of the year three of the past four seasons, finished seventh and received $17,000 in the tour's opening tournament of 2017 Sunday on Lake Guntersville. Morgan's daily limit of five bass weighed in at 13 pounds, 7 ounces to give him 62-14 for the four-day event. Mark Rose of West Memphis, Ark., won $125,000 with his 79-11 total - second-place Bryan Thrift of Shelby, N.C. had 78-12 - after catching 18-3 Sunday.

Basketball

- Sewanee split a home Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Sunday against Oglethorpe, with the women winning 53-50 for their third straight victory but the men losing 69-64. In the women's game, Bella Taylor scored a game-high 23 points for Sewanee (8-13, 5-0), teammates Hannah McCormack and Savannah Rose each added 10 and Corey Caulder had 11 rebounds. Oglethorpe (13-9, 7-1) led 19-14 after the first quarter, Sewanee was up 33-24 at halftime and Oglethorpe was back on top, 41-36, entering the final period. Taylor scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, though, and the Tigers didn't trail again. In the men's game, Brody Stone had 22 points and 13 rebounds for Sewanee (12-10, 5-6), Jorden Williams added 16 points and Hunter Buescher chipped in 15. Oglethorpe (7-15, 4-7) led 34-31 at halftime.

- Joe Boyer scored 24 points and Donovan Grubb had 20 points and 18 rebounds as West Georgia Tech won 89-86 over Georgia Northwestern Technical College on Saturday. Darrius Fugh and Daniel Parrish scored 21 points each and Patrick Simmons added 12 with four 3-pointers for the Bobcats (10-9), who got 10 assists and four steals from Alec Rattanaxay. Hiwassee beat the Lady Bobcats 72-25 with a balanced attack led by Ny'asia Holmes' 12 points; Sharqueva McCoy scored 10 for GNTC (0-15).

- Ringgold High School graduate Bethany Headrick had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Rebecca Cheeks from Sonoraville High led with 12 points as Reinhardt beat Montreat 62-51 Saturday in Waleska, Ga. The Lady Eagles improved to 23-3 overall and 15-3 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

Running

- East Tennessee State sprinter Kiana Davis from Ooltewah finished third in the women's 200-meter dash and fifth in the 60 in the Buccaneer Invitational indoor meet Saturday in Johnson City.

- Lee University's Justin Brooks won the men's 400 in 48.81 seconds at the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., and his twin Josiah was fourth in the 200 in the meet that included numerous NCAA Division I competitors. The Flames' Seth Eagleson was third in the 5000 with a school-record time of 14:59.05, and Audrey Smith set a women's 3000 school record with a 10:21.78. Lee's Amy Carpenter was fifth in the women's 5000, Christian Noble sixth in the men's 3000 and Lee also sixth in the men's distance medley relay.

- The Baylor School girls' cross country team earned a Distinguished Certificate of Academic Achievement from the TSSAA for an aggregate grade point average of 3.69 on a 4.0 scale in the fall of 2016, and 15 of the team's runners received individual awards for GPAs of 3.5 or higher. Those were seniors Alison Anderson, Hailey Miller, Sherry Tang and Kari Watson; juniors Hannah Berke, Virginia McEvoy and Mary Kathryne Schumaker; sophomores Catherine Cansley, Sydney Cansler, Beth Harrison, Merrit Newton, Addison Smith and Belle Wilson; and freshmen Ashlyn Celichowski and Grace Pippin.

Swimming

- Samantha and Jess Vargo from Signal Mountain and the Baylor Swim Club comprised half of the King University women's 200-yard medley relay team that set a program record of 1:53.20 Saturday at Barbourville, Ky. Jess also broke King's old 100 breaststroke standard with a 1:10.94, but teammate Macarena Martin Mayor did even better at 1:10.45.
