Around the Region: UTC golfers start spring competition

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golfers were tied for 18th after the first round Sunday of the 43-team Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Spring Classic in South Carolina. Maddy McDaniel shot a 2-over-par 74 to lead the Mocs to a 305 and is tied for 34th individually. Monica San Juan (75), Megan Woods (78) and Cristina Perez (78) also scored for UTC in its opening round of spring competition. Jacksonville (286), paced by co-leader Louise Persson's 68 - she's tied with St. John's Saskia Sterud - has a three-shot edge on Coastal Carolina and College of Charleston.

- Tommy Oliver was the medalist with a 36-hole 157 and led Sewanee to the Reeder Cup championship Saturday at Lookout Mountain Golf Club. The Tigers totaled 645, with Taylor Mottern and Alex Wedding sharing fourth individually with Bryan's Lucas Coffelt at 161. Bob Jones University was second at 655. Covenant was third at 667, led by Nathan Hawkins' second-place 159. Bryan was fourth at 672.

Baseball

- NCAA Division II No. 21-ranked Lee lost 13-5 Sunday in its Gulf South Conference rubber game with visiting Delta State, which led 11-1 after 3 1/2 innings. Jordan Howard was 2-for-3 with a double, Tyler Payne 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs and Nathan Wierzgac hit a home run for the Flames (11-4, 3-3). Delta State is 10-3, 4-2.

- Tennessee Wesleyan routed Campbellsville 16-3 in seven innings Sunday after blanking Shawnee State twice Saturday in Athens, 2-0 and 9-0. Austin Goss pitched a seven-hitter with seven strikeouts and Collin Ridout was 2-for-3 and scored a run in that first game, and Carson Bach threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the 9-0 game, when Adrian Gonzalez and Addison Adams each batted in two runs and Edwin Bonilla, Pedro Barrios and Ridout scored two apiece. Bonilla and Dan Ward each was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sunday, Ridout was 4-for-5 and Ward 3-for-4, each with a home run and four RBIs, and Aaron Ford struck out eight as the winning pitcher for the Bulldogs (9-7).

- Covenant was swept in its weekend USA South baseball series at LaGrange, which won Saturday's games 7-1 and 15-3 with Luke Harvey scoring three of the Scots' four runs. Alex Kerr had a first-inning RBI single and Julien Amorelli had two hits in the first loss for Covenant (5-7, 0-3), and Amorelli had an RBI hit and Caleb Bloye was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the finale.

Softball

- Lee completed a sweep of its GSC series with Delta State by winning 8-6 Sunday in Cleveland. Abby McKinney was 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs and Brooklynn Frazier 2-for-3 for the Flames (13-5, 4-2), who backed Leigh Beatenbough (6-3) and Taylor Moran (third save of season) in the circle.

- Sewanee lost 6-0 Sunday at Millsaps in SAA play, falling to 0-5, 0-3. Millsaps is 11-5, 3-0.

Lacrosse

- Meredith Sackett scored six goals Saturday as Sewanee rose to 3-0 in women's lacrosse with a 13-4 home win over Carthage. Kelly Thomsen netted two goals and Brianna Young had 15 saves and a program-record 13 groundballs.

- The Sewanee men (2-1) beat Transylvania 11-3 on Saturday with three goals and an assist from Hayden Hunt, two goals and two assists from Thomas Lynde and three assists from Jimmy Parker. Peter Brown had two goals and an assist, and Selby Austin made eight saves in goal.

- The first-year Lee women's team lost 20-4 Saturday at Montevallo (3-3), which got eight goals and an assist from Jamie Hudak. Hanah Rotello scored two goals and Brianne Schapira had a goal and an assist for Lee (0-4).

- The Tennessee Wesleyan men's team lost 16-13 Sunday to Indiana Tech. The Wesleyan women beat Point 10-7 on Saturday with four goals from Jasmine Hickan, three from Casey Schaefer, two plus an assist from Mikayla Virden and 18 saves by Kelly Bilz.
