Around the Region: UTC's Jared Johnson receives two SoCon honors

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga heavyweight Jared Johnson was named both wrestler of the week and student-athlete of the week by the Southern Conference. He went 4-0 at the Virginia Duals with two wins over ranked opponents. Johnson, a redshirt senior, is a two-time Academic All-SoCon team member and is currently working on his master's degree. He was an honors graduate last spring with a 3.76 grade point average and a degree in chemical engineering. This is the fourth time he has been wrestler of the week, just one fewer than Mocs all-time leaders Nick Soto (2011-14) and Matt Keller (2005-07).

Basketball

* Bryan College split an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday against visiting Union College (Ky.), with the Lady Lions winning 87-80 and the Lions losing 84-70. The women's game was tied at 25 after the first quarter, but Bryan (9-9, 7-5) led 44-38 at halftime and Union (13-7, 7-6) was up 60-58 entering the final period. The Lady Lions were led by Amber Levi (23 points), Tristan McClellan (20 points, four steals, three assists), Kaylee Smith (14 points), Tonesha Allison (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Keniesha Love (12 points). In the men's game, Oteriah Lee scored 23 points with nine assists and five steals, and Brice Cusick had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions (4-5, 1-10), who trailed 44-36 at halftime. Gerrard Newby's 30-point performance paced the Bulldogs (18-3, 11-0), who are ranked No. 2 in NAIA Division II.

* Tennessee Wesleyan University split an AAC doubleheader against Milligan College on Wednesday in Athens, with the men winning 107-104 and the women falling 62-43. In the men's game Kobe Foster led all scorers with 34 points for TWU (12-6, 8-4), which got 12 points from Aundre Reid and 11 from Jordan Hall. Milligan (9-11, 6-7) led 51-47 at halftime. For the Lady Bulldogs (10-9, 8-5), Hunter Simpson had 12 points and 10 rebounds as TWU shot 12-for-61 (19.7 percent) from the field, including 2-for-18 (11.1 percent) from 3-point range. Milligan (14-7, 10-3) led 13-9, 32-20 and 46-32 at the quarter breaks.

* Covenant's men lost for the fourth straight game, falling 59-56 at Piedmont in a USA South game Wednesday when a 3-pointer at the buzzer missed. Bailey Spragg (19 points), Patjo Twagirayezu (16 points) and Caleb Haynes (13 rebounds, eight points) led the Scots (7-9, 1-5). Piedmont (9-7, 4-2) trailed 30-25 at halftime.

* Georgia Northwestern Technical College sophomore Patrick Simmons was 8-of-9 from 3-point range, making his first eight, and scored 24 points in the Bobcats' 90-61 home win Tuesday against The Crown College. Also for GNTC (7-6), Darrius Fugh had 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals and Alec Rattanaxay scored 18 points.

Swimming

* Sewanee's swimming and diving teams had eight first-place finishes in losses to Rhodes last Sunday, starting witih Michael Whitehead, Kipling Klimas, Andrew Freibert and Kyle Schnell in the men's 200 medley relay. Freibert and Schnell finished first and second in the 50 freestyle, and the Tigers' Peter McCarthy and Owen Pearson were the first two in the 500 free. Sewanee's Meghan Mulhern won the women's 500 and was second in the 1650 free, and freshman Noel Whitlock won both women's diving events while Winston Westbrook and Jed Henrichsen took turns finishing second to each other in men's diving.

Boxing

* The Red Bank Boxing Club is hosting a night of amateur bouts Saturday featuring fighters from Georgia and Alabama as well as Tennessee. The event starts at 5 at the Luken Sports Facility behind Red Bank High School, and there are 15 bouts scheduled, organizer Skipper Fairbanks said. Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for students with no charge for ages 12-under. For information, call Fairbanks at 877-4113.
