Around the Region: Schedule out for Lee men's soccer team

The Lee University men's soccer team begins its first season under coach Derek Potteiger on Aug. 31 in a 7 p.m. home match against Anderson University, followed the next night by a visit from Trevecca Nazarene. The schedule was released Wednesday. After games Sept. 7 and 9 in Daytona Beach, Fla., against Palm Beach Atlantic and host Embry-Riddle, the Flames will be back home to face Young Harris on Sept. 12 and Gulf South Conference opponents Delta State and Mississippi College on Sept. 15 and 17. Other home games are Sept. 29 against Shorter, Oct. 8 against West Florida, Oct. 20 against West Alabama and Oct. 22 against Alabama-Huntsville.

Softball

- The King's Men slowpitch team based out of Lookout Valley Baptist Church won the 19th annual NSA MADD Church Tournament last weekend in Cookeville. The King's Men had finished third in the tournament in 2014 and 2015 but earned the championship this time with a 14-1 win over The River Church, a 12-2 defeat of Dyllis Baptist and 28-26 and 26-23 victories over two-time champion Trinity Assembly. Nathan Durham led the new champs with an .875 batting average (14-for-16), while Jimmy Thomas batted .813, Austin Patton .750 with four home runs, Garrett Reagan .688 with three homers and Chase Turner .667. Tim Prarie, Chris Sislo and Tommy Tavers also batted better than .600 and hit one homer each. The King's Men are 30-18 this season.

Volleyball

- Bryan College released its 2017 volleyball schedule this week, and it features an intriguing home tournament even before the season begins. After an Aug. 23 home exhibition against Bob Jones, coach Jessica Day's Lady Lions will host the Bryan Bash preseason tournament Aug. 25-26 with five NAIA conferences represented. Bryan will play Southeastern, Bethel, Asbury and Pikeville. The official season opener is Aug. 29 at Cumberlands (Ky.), followed Sept. 1-2 by the Southeastern Challenge at Lindsey Wilson. The Lady Lions will begin Appalachian Athletic Conference play Sept. 7 at Tennessee Wesleyan and then host Cumberlands on Sept. 8 and AAC foe Montreat on Sept. 12. Other home matches are on Sept. 22 and 23 and Oct. 3, 12, 17, 20, 21 and 24. Bryan went 18-19 last year, 13-9 in the AAC.
