Around the Region: Baylor's Dan Flack to coach USA Junior Pan Pacific swimmers

USA Swimming has chosen Baylor School and Baylor Swim Club coach Dan Flack to head the USA boys' team for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships next Aug. 23-27 in Fiji. Allison Beebe of the Santa Clara (Calif.) Swim Club will be the girls' head coach.

"Dan is ready and able to take on the role of head coach," USA Swimming national junior team director Mitch Dalton said in the announcement release. "Besides his outstanding work with Trey Freeman over the last few seasons, his name has been a staple on the national junior team coaches roster for the better part of a decade."

Flack was on the 2011 FINA World Junior Team staff and just this summer was on the USA staff at the World Juniors in Indianapolis, where Baylor swimmer Freeman was third in the 400 freestyle and fifth in the 200 free after earning 18-under national titles in both. Freeman, a 10-time high school All-American from Salt Lake City with his senior season still to go, signed this past week with Florida, and Baylor teammate Zach Althoff - a seven-time prep All-American - signed with Pennsylvania. The boarding student from Frederick, Md., was a junior national finalist in the 100 backstroke.

Basketball

-The Lee University women's basketball team edged Florida Southern 70-68 and the Lee men opened their season with an 81-45 rout of Tuskegee in games Saturday in Cleveland. Lindsey Roddy scored 15 points and Abby Bertram and Carrie Cheeks added 14 each for the Lady Flames (2-0), who outscored their guests 20-14 in the fourth quarter. Cheeks led with seven rebounds. Twelve players scored for the Flames, led by Jason Landman and Ryan Montgomery with 12 and 10 points. Levi Woods and Parker Suedekum had four assists apiece.

-The Tennessee Wesleyan women beat visiting Carver Bible College 63-43 on Saturday, but the Carver men dropped the Bulldogs to 2-4 with an 89-79 win. Savannah Atkins had 10 points and nine rebounds and Gina Dick scored nine points for the Lady Bulldogs (1-2), while Madison Walkup and Summer Morris grabbed and eight rebounds. Jalen Oliver led the TWU men with 15 points and three steals, while Darius Filer scored 14 points and Kenny Dean had 10 points and nine rebounds.

-The Bryan College Lady Lions lost for the first time in four games this season, 77-67 to Ohio Christian at Union (Ky.), but Karli Combs and Amber Levi scored 19 and 16 points in defeat and Sarah Cain added 12. Deandra Luna had eight assists and three steals.

-West Georgia Tech beat the Georgia Northwestern men 73-51, as the Bobcats (2-3) went cold after getting within 38-33 early in the second half. Bryce Waters led GNTC with 12 points and seven rebounds, and Tyler Phillips scored 11. The Lady Bobcats (2-0) won by forfeit over Trinity Baptist.

-UTC women's basketball coach Jim Foster will be the speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without.

Volleyball

-Lee ended its volleyball regular season Saturday with a 3-0 Gulf South win at Valdosta State. Set scores were 25-7, 25-22, 25-21. Silvia Sartori had 11 kills and Bailey Kress and Quinne Daoust added nine and eight for Lee (19-9, 10-6). Sadie Johnson and Kristi Farley each had 15 assists, Johnson with 10 digs, and MaKayla Beebe had 11 digs.

-UTC is seeded sixth for the Southern Conference volleyball tournament in Cullowhee, N.C., and will face No. 3 seed UNC Greensboro in a quarterfinal match Friday at 7:30 p.m. Furman is the top seed.

Soccer

-Bryan College senior Stephen Ricketts has added to his soccer honors by repeating as a CoSIDA academic all-district first-team selection. He was a College Division District 2 choice.The 2017 AAC defensive player of the year has a 3.93 grade point average as an integrated marketing communications major and was a second-team Academic All-American last year.

Running

-Covenant's cross country teams both finished 12th in the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional on Saturday at Newport News, Va. Sewanee's men were 18th out of 32 teams; the female Tigers were 23 out of 34. Sewanee's Owen Legrone was 35th and Covenant's Caleb Aikens and Matthew Tueller were 45th and 54th in the 8k. Covenant's Lilly Smith and Michelann Settle were 47th and 53rd in the 6k.
