Around the Region: Mark Harrell qualifies for U.S. Mid-Amateur match play

Lookout Mountain, Ga., resident and local businessman Mark Harrell qualified for match play in the 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur golf tournament at two Atlanta courses with a 73 in the delayed second round Monday at the Capital City Club-Crabapple course. Harrell, an Alabama graduate who played professionally for five years, shot a 72 Saturday at Atlanta National. David Watts of Cleveland, Tenn., missed the cut with a 158. Bradford Tilley of Easton, Conn., led the stroke-play qualifying at 136. The 25 golfers at 5-over-par 146 will have a playoff this morning for the last 16 spots in the 64-man match-play field for players ages 25 and over.

* The Dalton State women's golf team, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, is four shots behind No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.), the leader, after Monday's opening round in the 10-team Thomas University Fall Invitational at Kinderlou Forest in Valdosta, Ga. DSC is at 298 with Heather Nail third individually at 1-under-par 71, Caroline Griffin fourth at 72, Isabel Rijos tied for fifth at 76 and Tia Teiniketo tied for ninth at 77.

* The Georgia Northwestern golf team is in third place at 15-over-par 303 after the first round Monday in the USCAA national tournament on the Penn State University Blue Course. Cleary University of Michigan goes into the final day leading at 298, three ahead of Indiana's St. Mary of the Woods College. Adrian Clark and Branton Bailey shot 75s for GNTC, which got a 76 from Cole Roberts and a 77 from Lane Strickland.

Auto Racing

* Sixteen-year-old Ooltewah resident Jake Clayton won the Super Pro class and $2,000 Saturday night in the drag races at Brainerd Motorsports Park. Clayton outlasted 62 cars in six rounds of racing in his 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier Roadster with a winning time of 5.70 seconds on a 5.70 dial. Brandon Jones of Rainsville, Ala., was second in 5:35 on a 5.34 dial in a dragster prepared by Steve Farrow. Chris Smith of Ringgold won the Foot Brake class with an 8.95 run on an 8.94 dial with Jamie Coley of Summerville, Ga., second. Vanessa Flanagan of Wildersville, Tenn., won the Outlaw Dragster class in 3.93 seconds with Steve Bolin of Crossville, Tenn., second at 3.97. Brian Murphy was first and Bill Clanton second in the Outlaw Door class. Lawson Saine of LaFayette, Ga., won the Junior Dragster class with an 8.14 run on an 8.12 dial; Drew Brown of Chickamauga was second.

Soccer

* Tennessee Wesleyan juniors Emiley Saddler and Els van Hooijdonk were chosen the Appalachian Athletic Conference women's soccer players of the week for their work in two AAC wins with a combined 8-1 scoring margin. Midfielder Saddler, who's from Chattanooga, scored two goals and van Hooijdonk led a defense that allowed only four shots on goal.

Running

* Covenant College's Caleb Aikens and Lilly Smith were among the USA South cross country runners of the week after their performances Saturday in the Disney Classic in central Florida. Aikens, a freshman from Crossville, Tenn., was the men's rookie honoree for the second time for finishing 21st overall in the large field. His 27:25 was a personal record for eight kilometers and led the Scots to sixth place among non-Division I teams. Smith was the overall women's runner of the week for the second time in a row and the third time in 2017. She had a PR of 19:48 for the 5k as the Lady Scots also finished sixth among non-DI teams.

Field Hockey

* Sewanee senior goaltender Katya Waters is the Southern Athletic Association field hockey defensive player of the week for the second time this season after her 10-save performance in Saturday's 6-1 win over Ferrum. She leads the SAA with a .833 save percentage and is ranked 17th in NCAA Division III.

Swimming

* Dixie State University freshman Anna Ward from Signal Mountain and Girls Preparatory School won the 200 individual medley and led off the winning 200 medley relay in a dual-meet loss to Loyola Marymount this past Saturday. Her IM time was 2:17.10.
