Around the Region: Funeral for Lookouts home run king Roy Hawes set for Thursday

Former Chattanooga Lookouts star and longtime Ringgold-area resident Roy Hawes died Monday at the age of 91, and his funeral service is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Ringgold First Baptist Church. Visitation with the family is 3-8 p.m. today at the Wilson Funeral Home Wallis-Stewart Chapel in Ringgold. The Illinois native and U.S. Navy World War II veteran played baseball briefly for the Washington Senators in 1951 and played for the Lookouts in the 1952-55 and 1958-60 seasons, setting the team's career record for home runs with 101. He's in the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame.

Golf

* Mark Harrell of Lookout Mountain, Ga., advanced to the round of 32 in the 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur golf tournament with a 19-hole victory Tuesday over Andrew Rhodes of Westfield, Ind., at Atlanta's Capital City Club-Crabapple. Harrell plays this morning against Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, N.C. The winner will play again in the afternoon.

* The NAIA's second-ranked Dalton State women golfers finished a close second to No. 4 Cumberlands (Ky.), 597 to 599, in the 10-team Thomas University Fall Invitational at Valdosta, Ga., and four of the Lady Roadrunners were among the top six individuals. Caroline Griffin was third at 148, Heather Nail fourth at 149, Isabel Rijos fifth at 150 and Tia Teiniketo tied for sixth at 152.

* Georgia Northwestern finished fourth at 616 Tuesday in the USCAA national golf tournament at Penn State, after leading with nine holes to play. SUNY-Delhi won with a 36-hole 604, followed by Cleary at 609 and St. Mary's of the Woods at 611. The Bobcats' Branton Bailey was a second-team All-American with a 153, while Adrian Clark shot 155, David Manis 157, Lane Strickland 158 and Cole Roberts 162.

Volleyball

* Lee University defeated visiting Emmanuel 3-0 in volleyball Tuesday, by the set scores of 25-19, 25-15, 25-14. Silvia Sartori had 13 kills and 12 digs and Alex Reuter had 10 kills and four aces for Lee (12-4), while Kristi Farley and Sadie Johnson had 20 and 16 assists and MaKayla Beebe made 19 digs. Brooke Wilsman added eight kills.

* Covenant College won 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-17, 27-25) in USA South volleyball at Maryville, for its 10th victory in 11 matches. Schuyler Moore had 43 assists, 17 digs and nine kills, Jessica Seehorn had 17 kills and 17 digs, Hannah Stewart had 32 digs and Ginny Moore had 25 digs with 11 kills for Covenant (13-7, 7-0). Alexa Spurling also had 11 kills, Hannah Harris had nine and Emily Moore had 13 digs.

* Bryan College lost 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-21) in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball Tuesday night at Bluefield, leaving the Lady Lions 5-16 overall, 4-7 in league play. Bluefield is 14-10, 9-2. Emalie Hicks led Bryan with nine kills, while Kristen Parrish had 21 digs and Veronica Salas had 15 assists.

* Georgia Northwestern fell to 0-14 for the season with a 3-1 road loss (25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22) Monday against the Covenant junior varsity. Anna Schorle and Jamese Miller each had seven kills and Morgen Simmons had 15 digs in defeat for the Lady Bobcats. Schorle had nine kills and Simmons 12 digs in a recent 3-1 road loss to the Bryan JV.

Soccer

* The Bryan College women's soccer team won 3-2 on Tuesday at Milligan, but the men's match was postponed. Yarahi Hernandez gave the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead, but they were down before second-half goals by Ana Ramirez and Claudia Eckstein.

* Jake Williamson had a goal and an assist as Berry beat visiting Covenant 4-0 in Division III men's soccer.

Running

* Milligan College senior Sarah Kate Gartman from Chattanooga was the AAC women's cross country runner of the week for her individual 5k win pacing the Lady Buffs' team victory at the Allen and Phyllis Morgan Invitational in Jefferson City, Tenn. Her time was 18:33.
