Around the Region: Bandys win national mother-daughter clay courts title

McCallie School assistant tennis coach Meg Bandy and Girls Preparatory School senior Maddox Bandy won the USTA National Mother-Daughter Clay Courts tournament last week in Naples, Fla. The Signal Mountain residents were seeded No. 1 and won 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match Sunday against second-seeded Sheila and Christine Chiricosta of Avon Lake, Ohio. The Bandys won their previous matches 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

Golf

* Trident Transport director of operations Mark Harrell from Lookout Mountain, Ga., won twice Wednesday in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship in Atlanta. Harrell topped Chad Wilfong of Charlotte, N.C., 1 up in the round of 32, then beat Michael Muehr of Potomac Falls, Va., by the same score in the round of 16 in the competition at Capital City Club-Crabapple. According to a USGA release, in the win over Wilfong, Harrell made seven birdies against no bogeys in what was the equivalent to a score of 63 with concessions. Harrell played golf professionally for five years after graduating from Alabama. Now he will get the chance to continue his run at this United States Golf Association title. He's set to play Tyler Crawford of Indio, Calif., at 8:30 this morning in the quarterfinals, and the semifinals are also scheduled for today. The 36-hole final is Friday.

Soccer

* Sophomore midfielder Lizzy Hightower found the net in the second overtime period to lead the Covenant women's team to a 2-1 home win over Berry College on Wednesday. Hightower's goal in the 106th minute completed a comeback victory that was the second straight win overall for the Lady Scots (7-5) and first win against Berry (2-7-1) since 2012. The Vikings took the game's first lead when Samantha Schoppy scored unassisted on a rebound in the 28th minute, but they lost their advantage on an own goal in the 81st minute. Berry finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots, including 8-5 on goal, but Covenant's Rachel Lemay made seven saves.

* The Bryan College men rolled to a 4-1 victory against Milligan College on Wednesday night, with Brad Spooner scoring twice and Kevin Roenpage adding another goal on the way to a 3-0 lead by halftime. Charlie Clarke assisted on Spooner's first goal and Arthur Dombrowski on Roenpage's. Milligan (1-12-1, 0-7 Appalachian Athletic Conference) got on the scoreboard in the 47th minute, and Dombrowski notched the final goal with help from Daniel Vonthin and Marcelo Monteiro. Bryan (9-5, 5-1) outshot Milligan 20-5 overall and 8-1 on goal, with Nick Smith making four saves for the Lions.

* Tennessee Wesleyan University played an AAC doubleheader Wednesday at Reinhardt, with the TWU women playing to a scoreless tie in overtime and the TWU men losing 3-2 in overtime. The TWU men fell to 8-5 and 3-4, with Reinhardt improving to 8-3-2, 7-0-1. TWU's women are now 6-3-2 and 5-1-2, with Reinhardt 5-6-3, 4-2-2.

Volleyball

* Kellee Geren had 32 assists and fellow Cleveland High School alumna Marissa Langford contributed nine kills and 11 digs as their Milligan College team won 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-21) in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match Tuesday at Tennessee Wesleyan. Marjorie Smith had eight kills, Tia Madden 12 assists and Elizabeth Houk 12 digs for TWU (5-16, 1-10). Milligan is 9-13, 6-6.

* Cleveland State lost 3-0 to Gadsden State on Wednesday night, with the set scores 25-19, 25-20 and 25-22. The first-year Lady Cougars dropped to 9-5 with the loss.

Softball

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team's Blue & Gold intrasquad scrimmage is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Frost Stadium. A cookout will follow the game, and while there is no charge to attend either, donations will be accepted to cover the cost of food.
