UTC men's basketball team gets commitment from 7-footer

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball program picked up a commitment Wednesday from Thomas Smallwood, a 7-foot forward from Bordeaux, France.

Smallwood, who played three seasons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has graduated from the school and will have one season to play for the Mocs.

In his three seasons with the Blazers, Smallwood played in 36 games, averaging 2.0 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. He shot 43 percent from the floor, 30 percent from 3-point range and 73 percent from the free-throw line. He scored a career-high 13 points in a win against Florida Atlantic as a freshman.

Prior to UAB, Smallwood played for Pau Lacq Orthez, the French under-21 team, averaging 8.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

Smallwood will be the seventh player to put on a UTC game uniform for the first time next season.

Guards Maurice Commander and Donovann Toatley plus forwards Kevin Easley and Keigan Kerby have already signed with the program, while junior college guard Jonathan Scott committed Tuesday. Transfer guard Jerry Johnson and forward Ramon Vila will be available after sitting out, although Vila won't be eligible until after the first semester is over.

Justin Brown and Duane Moss will also be available after sitting out the 2017-18 season as redshirts, although Moss played in seven games prior to his injury, averaging 4.7 points and shooting 8-for-14 from 3-point range.
