Area Sports Notes: Chattanooga State clinches TCCAA softball top spot

Chattanooga State's softball winning streak ended at 35 games Friday in Morristown, Tenn., but not until the nationally 12th-ranked Lady Tigers clinched first place in the TCCAA with a six-inning 8-0 win over Walters State. Chattanooga State (48-9, 31-2) lost 6-3 in game two despite taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning and still has two games against the Lady Senators today but will be the top seed for the state/region tournament May 6-9 in Chattanooga. Kaleigh Wynne pitched a two-hitter in the Lady Tigers' win, when Madison Tidmore was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI, Kiley Longmire was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI and Kayla Woody was 2-for-3. Jenna Edwards struck out 11 in game two and took a one-hitter into the seventh. Wynne was 1-for-2 with a home run and two walks, Madison Crabtree homered and singled and Aimie Davidson was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Tennis

' Sewanee's Jack Gray from Baylor School is the men's tennis player of the year in the Southern Athletic Association and the 19th-rankedk Tigers' John Shackelford is the men's coach the year, while Andres Carro joined Gray on the All-SAA first team, Ryan Olps and Jordan Brewer made the second team and Alejandro Becker and Jack Metzger received honorable mention. In the women's All-SAA honors, Clementina Davila and Christina Merchant made the first team, Catherine Owen and Ellie Czura made the second team and freshman Owen was the league's newcomer of the year. Haley Tucker and Sara Thompson earned honorable mention from 12th-ranked Sewanee. Another second-teamer was Berry freshman Kathryn Barker from Coahulla Creek High School.

' University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis coach Chuck Merzbacher announced Friday the addition of Tokyo native Kaisei Kuroki to the Mocs roster. He played regularly as a freshman last season at Eastern Illinois and has lived in five countries on four continents. He attended the ISP Mouratoglou International School in Paris, France. "Kaisei has trained at the most famous tennis academy in Europe," Merzbacher said in a release. "He has extensive play worldwide, and I believe after one year of Division I tennis under his belt he will add some experience and depth to a young team next year."

Fishing

' Jacob Wheeler of Harrison moved up from 42nd the first day to third Friday with a limit totaling 22 pounds, 9 ounces Friday in the Bassmaster Elite tournament on Grand Lake O' the Cherokees in Oklahoma. He's at 39-3. Brandon Lester of Fayetteville, Tenn., took the lead at 43-9, one pound ahead of B.A.S.S. legend Kevin VanDam of Michigan.

' Dayton residents Michael Neal and Andy Morgan finished 34th at 24-1 and 38th at 23-11 in the FLW Tour event on Lewis Smith Lake in Alabama. Each earned $10,000.

Basketball

' The funeral service for former City High School basketball star Rhonda "K.K." Mikes will be held at noon today at Taylor Funeral Home, with burial in Forest Hills Cemetery. Mikes died last Saturday at age 52. One of the best players ever in the Chattanooga area, she led City to a 1983 state championship and still holds the TSSAA girls' record of 38 field goals made in one state tournament. She went on to an All-America junior college career.

Golf

' David Noll Jr. of Dalton and Mike Nance of Calhoun are in second place at 9-under-par 63, one behind Atlanta's Michael Morris and Decatur's Tim Arnoult, after the first round Friday of the Georgia Four-Ball Championship at Coosa Country Club in Rome. Cres Dodd of Calhoun with Steve Davis of Rome and Vance Embry of Dalton with Justin Connelly of McDonough are tied for fifth at 65.

Lacrosse

' The Lee University women's lacrosse team ended a second season of great progress Friday night with a 21-6 loss to Alabama-Huntsville in the Gulf South Conference Invitational semifinals at Young Harris. Emma Hill and Hanah Rotello each scored two goals and Madeline Perrigo had two assists in the third loss of the season for Lee (9-9), which went 0-14 in 2017.
