Area Sports Notes: Lindsey Roddy leads rout for Lady Flames; Flames fall by one

Lindsey Roddy scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and added four assists as Lee University's Lady Flames rolled to an 87-47 Gulf South Conference basketball win Saturday at Montevallo. Lee couldn't make it a sweep, however, as the Flames fell 68-67 as the hosts' Jamar Gilbert hit a layup and a 3-point basket for the last five points of the men's game. Lee (9-5, 4-3) missed two shots in the last seven seconds. Parker Suedekum scored 15 points and Colton Blevins and Chase Cullen added 14 and 12 in defeat. Chris Williams scored 26 with five 3s for Montevallo (7-8, 2-4). Supporting Roddy for the Lady Flames (12-3, 5-2), Erin Walsh had 14 points and seven assists and Carrie Cheeks had 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Lee plays Wednesday at West Alabama in a GSC doubleheader originally scheduled for Monday.

-Dalton State has dropped to No. 18 in the NAIA Division I men's basketball poll but beat No. 12 Faulkner 75-63 in their Southern States Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at Dalton's Mashburn Arena. Reed Dungan scored 16 points and Isaiah Box had 12 points and seven assists for the winning Roadrunners (11-4, 4-1), while Mon'Darius Black scored 10 points and Carnilious Simmons had 15 rebounds and three steals with nine points. Faulkner was led in scoring by Marquis Grays with 19 points; Lucas Luttrell had 14 and Logan Jozwiak had 13 plus 11 rebounds.

-Tennessee Wesleyan lost 68-65 in overtime to the host Bluefield women and 85-81 in OT to the Bluefield men in Appalachian Athletic Conference games Saturday. Bluefield's Danae Cox had 23 points, including the winning 3-pointer, and nine rebounds against the Lady Bulldogs (9-5, 8-3), who followed a three-point second quarter with a 25-point third but lost a seven-point lead in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter. Hunter Simpson scored 22 points and Madison Walkup had 15 plus nine rebounds for TWU. For the Bulldogs (5-11, 3-6), Jalen Oliver scored 21 points with four 3s and Johnson Decembre and Kenny Dean had 13 and 11 points with eight and seven rebounds.

-The Bryan women improved to 12-5, 9-2 in the AAC, with an 81-62 home win over Brenau in which Amber Levi had 19 points with 4-for-6 3-point shooting and Deandra Luna had 15 points and seven assists. Shayla Ludy was 3-for-3 on 3s in scoring 13 points, and Keneisha Love had 10 points and 10 rebounds - six offensive - as the Lady Lions moved into a first-place tie with Reinhardt and Point, one game ahead of Tennessee Wesleyan.

-Bailey Spragg scored a career-high 28 points and added six steals and six assists as the Covenant men beat visiting Huntingdon in USA South basketball. He was 10-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-6 on 3-pointers. Will Crumly contributed 17 points and nine rebounds and Caleb Haynes and Patjo Twagirayezu scored 11 and 10 points for the Scots (7-4, 3-1), while Nick Palmer made four steals. Berto Dryden, who had 24 points, seven rebounds and three steals in Wednesday's loss at Maryville, had seven assists Saturday.

-Julia Gaither scored a career-high 35 points and Abby Hubert and Keya Jenkins had 21 and 15 with eight and 14 rebounds as the Cleveland State Lady Cougars returned to action with an 84-72 home win over Gadsden State. Cleveland State also won the men's game, 84-83, on Tevin Olison's layup with eight seconds to go. He totaled 27 points with four 3s and five assists, while Delaino Walker had 16 points and seven rebounds and Cam Copeland and Darius Turman scored 11 points each. Maurice Johnson led Gadsden with 23 points. Jenkins also had seven assists for the winning women, while Gaither made 10 of 15 shots from the field, 13 of 16 free throws, four steals and four assists.

-University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's basketball assistant coach Walter Offutt will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday, but it will be at a new location. Instead of Finley Stadium the meeting will be at nearby Southside Social, and those attending are asked to park in the gravel lot between there and the apartment complex under construction at the corner of Chestnut and 20th streets. Enter the building through the gate adjacent to the lot's handicap spaces. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without, and as usual the public is invited.
