Area Sports Notes: Sewanee finishes fifth in women's tennis indoor nationals

Host Sewanee finished fifth in the 2018 ITA Division III women's indoor national team tournament with a 5-0 win Sunday over 12th-ranked Washington & Lee at Baylor School. After the doubles teams of Clementina Davila and Catherine Owen, Ellis Czura and Christina Merchant and Bea Benavides and Sara Thompson all won for the 17th-ranked Tigers, Czura and Owen sealed the team win with straight-sets singles victories. Sewanee won both its matches after losing to No. 2-ranked Emory, which won the championship by downing No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer 5-0 at McCallie.

Softball

» Chattanooga State opened TCCAA play Sunday by beating Motlow State 11-1 in five innings and 3-2 in nine. Kaleigh Wynne pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and an unearned run and went 4-for-4 with four RBIs in the first game, when Alyssia Bowen was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs and Katie Cheeseman was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI for the Lady Tigers (11-5). Wynne homered in game two, when Kayla Woody was 3-for-4 with two runs, including the winner on Madison Tidmore's infield hit. Jenna Edwards pitched all nine innings, striking out eight.

» The UTC softball team closed out its visit to Oxford, Miss., with a 5-3 loss to Saint Louis on Sunday in the Ole Miss Classic. The Mocs (8-11) outhit Saint Louis (5-8) 7-6 but left 13 runners on base, and the Billikens had a three-run third inning and a two-run fifth. Ashley Conner was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Amanda Beltran also had an RBI hit and Alyssa Coppinger was 2-for-4 for UTC.

» Lee lost 8-0 Sunday as visiting North Alabama swept their Gulf South Conference series. Taylor Moran went 2-for-2 with a walk for the Lady Flames (11-9, 4-5), who were held to five hits.

» Cleveland State split two games with Roane State on Saturday. In a 5-4 win, Emily Yell was 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and three RBIs for the host Cougars (7-4), and Shiane Stockwell (6-0) struck out six batters. In their 7-5 loss, Yell, Hailey Galvan and Rachel Pierce each had two hits.

Baseball

» Lee won 8-7 Sunday to avoid being swept by North Alabama. The visiting Lions won 3-0 and 5-4 in 16 innings in Saturday's games. The second was the longest in Lee history. In the opener, Tyler Joyner pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts, Tate Mathis had two RBI singles and Kyle Hubbuch homered for the Lions. Logan Carter doubled in two runs in the top of the 16th in game two, and Lee loaded the bases twice wth one out but got only one run - on a wild pitch. For that game, Flames leadoff batter Tyler Payne reached base on an RBI single and four walks. On Sunday, Lee (7-11, 3-3 GSC) took the lead for the first time with a three-run eighth and held off the Lions, who scored twice in the ninth. Dalton Ney was 3-for-4 with a double, Payne 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs and Jordan Howard 1-for-3 with a home run and two walks for the Flames.

» Cleveland State completed a sweep of Roane State with Sunday's 10-9 win after Hunter Oliver's single scored Brandon Mason in the bottom of the ninth. Mason was 3-for-4 and Joey Roberson had a pair of two-run homers for the Cougars (11-5, 3-0 TCCAA), who had three walk-off wins in the three-game series.

» Sewanee lost 8-7 Sunday to Centre despite outhitting the visitors 12-10. Tyler Dunbar was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Tigers (1-11, 0-6 Southern Athletic Association).

» Tennessee Wesleyan lost 3-2 Sunday at St. Andrews, completing a game suspended by darkness Saturday. Tyler Halas went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Bulldogs (9-10, 1-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference).

Diving

» Sewanee divers Noel Whitlock and Paisley Simmons finished seventh and 16th in the 1-meter competition at the NCAA Division III Zone 2 Regional Championships this past weekend in San Antonio. Simmons was 11th and Whitlock 13th in 3-meter.
