Area Sports Notes: Dalton golfers Rob Neal, Joey Westmoreland finish 2nd at Georgia Four Ball Tournament

Dalton residents Rob Neal and Joey Westmoreland tied for second in the Georgia Four Ball Tournament at Jekyll Island Golf Club with a 54-hole total of 7-under-par 209 capped by a 1-over 73 on Sunday. Neal and Westmoreland, who shared first place in the championship flight with Conyers' Stephen Hall and Covington's Marshall Moore, tied two other teams for second overall, winding up a stroke behind Waynesboro's Chris Mangieri and Daniel Mobley, who closed with a 70 in flight one. Clay Hill of Dalton and Bryan Deems of Chatsworth closed with a 72 and tied for fourth in the championship flight at 214, while Macon's Tre Lamb - a former Calhoun resident - and Smyrna's Cal Patterson closed with a 72 and finished tied for ninth at 220 with Greg Brock of Rocky Face and Dalton's Tony Patterson, who shot a 74 on Sunday. In flight one, Tunnel Hill's Andy Nations and Dalton's Lucas Nations tied for third at 212 after a 69 on Sunday, while Calhoun's Jeff Brown and Hal Lamb were eighth at 226 after a closing 75. In flight two, Trion's Will Dendy and Dalton's Clay Shaw shared sixth at 233 after Sunday's 75. In flight three, Summerville's Ben Neal and playing partner Jeremy W. York from Demorest closed with a 76 to tie for fourth at 220.

Softball

» The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga scored all of its runs in the bottom of the seventh in a 4-3 loss to Villanova on Sunday at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. J.J. Hamill, Hayleigh Weissenbach and Brook Womack each had two hits for the Mocs (11-14). Hamill had a home run, a double and two RBIs. Devan Brown and Weissenbach each had a double, with the latter driving in a run against the Wildcats (6-9).

» Covenant College lost 7-2 and won 7-5 in Saturday's USA South doubleheader at LaGrange. Carlin Labuzan was 2-for-4 with an RBI single and Shade Epes had the other RBI hit in the loss for the Lady Scots (12-12, 4-2). Labuzan had the winning two-run double in the seventh inning of game two, when Epes was 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored three runs and Madelyn Ames and Erika Mast each was 2-for-3, Ames scoring twice.

Track & Field

» Led by Emily Poole and Rebekah Wich as the top two finishers in the 5000-meter run, the UTC women's track and field team opened its outdoor season Saturday in the Gamecock Quad Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State in Oxford, Ala. The Mocs set seven personal records, including Poole's 17:28.80 and Wich's 18:29.96 in the 5k. Abby Bateman and Nicole Buerhle set PRs finishing second and third in the 800, and Brianna Nelson, Haley Morris and Hannah Caldwell were second through fourth with PRs in the 1500. Rebekah Hampton was third in long jump and triple jump and fifth in the 100 hurdles, Taylor Grayson third in shot put and Katie Coker fifth in the 400.

» Lee University's Emily Buwalda was fifth in the women's 800 in the NCAA Division II indoor meet Saturday night in Pittsburg, Kan., and Lee's Josiah Brooks was eighth in the men's triple jump. Buwalda's time was 2:09.07; Brooks' distance was 15.35 meters (50 feet, 4 1/2 inches).

Lacrosse

» Lee's women lost 24-16 in a Gulf South Conference match Saturday at Montevallo, despite five goals from Emma Hill and four from Becca Broadwick. Kaylyn Dillon and Hannah Rotello each scored two for Lee (4-3, 0-3). Janey Johnson scored six for Montevallo (4-4, 1-2).

Basketball

» Lookout Valley Baptist won the Access Men's Church Basketball League with a 72-71 victory over Oakwood Baptist last week at Oakwood on Bonny Oaks Drive. Lookout Valley (11-2) had a bye to the title game as the regular-season winner out of 13 teams, while No. 3 seed Oakwood (13-3) got there with wins over the TVA Hustlers, 84-74; First Baptist-Chattanooga, 73-70; and No. 2 seed Riverside Industrial, 60-50. Lookout Valley player-manager Garrett Reagan credited "outstanding play" by Fred Matthews, Greg Rivers, Zach Sutherland, Chase Traffica, Johnny Watson and Ryan Wood.
