Area Sports Notes: UTC's Emily Poole wins 5000-meter run at Emory

Emily Poole won the 5000-meter run Saturday for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's track and field team, which finished fifth out of 24 teams in the Emory Invitational in Atlanta. The former Heritage High School and Dalton State College standout, who was second Friday in the 10k, won the 5k in 17:36.33. Also for the Mocs, Abby Bateman was second in the 800 in 2:19.07, with Nicole Buerhle fifth; Sophia Neglia, Brianna Nelson and Rebekah Wich were sixth, seventh and ninth in the 5k; Hannah Caldwell was seventh in the 1500, and Rebekah Hampton was ninth in the triple jump. Running unattached in the track meet, UTC cross country runners John Payne, Mark Britt and Nathan Watson were fourth, sixth and eighth in the men's 1500.

Golf

' The UTC women's golf team is tied for eighth at 631 after two rounds of the 12-team LSU Tiger Classic at Baton Rouge, La., and the Mocs' Cristina Perez moved up into a tie for eighth individually at 152 with her 73 on Saturday. Monica San Juan is tied for 12th at 154, and Megan Woods is at 161. Houston at 602 takes an 11-shot team lead over LSU into the final round today.

' Krista Reinhardt will lead the Bryan College women's golfers into the Harrison Bay Invitational at the local Bear Trace course Monday and Tuesday. The last two weeks Reinhardt was second individually in Point University's tournament at Callaway Gardens and fifth in Brenau's invitational in Gainesville, Ga., where teammate Taylor Williams was 12th.

Baseball

' Jumpei Akanuma and Thomas Zazzaro pitched a combined five-hitter with eight strikeouts as Lee University completed a three-game Gulf South Conference baseball sweep of visiting Auburn-Montgomery with a 3-1 win Saturday. Peyton Meeker was 3-for-4 and Jordan Howard was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Flames (16-14, 9-6), while Tyler Payne was 2-for-3 and Miguel Pimentel was 2-for-4, each scoring a run.

' Sewanee lost 11-4 but then won 14-8 in its Southern Athletic Association doubleheader at Oglethorpe. Jared Demkowicz was 3-for-4 with two homers, a triple, four RBIs and four runs scored in the win for the Tigers (6-17, 1-11), when Chris McNulty was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run, Derek Hullings was 1-for-2 with three walks, four runs and two RBIs. Bryce Benedict, Braxton Swanson and Jake Woolard each was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. In Saturday's first game, Sewanee's Beau Allen was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Drew Mancuso hit a pinch-hit two-run homer.

' Former Walker Valley and Cleveland State standout Caleb Longley went 4-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and the first four RBIs of the game as East Tennessee State opened Southern Conference play Friday night with a 7-4 win at Samford. The host Bulldogs won Saturday, 6-2, with Longley scoring the 12-7 Buccaneers' first run.

Lacrosse

' The Lee women's lacrosse team lost 13-6 Saturday at the University of Charleston in West Virginia. Freshman Becca Broadwick led Lee (7-5) with three goals, giving her 43 for the season, and Kaylyn Dillon had two. Aryanna Jones scored four for Charleston (6-3).

' The Sewanee women's lacrosse team beat Hendrix 16-3 in a home SAA match Saturday. Preston Cooper and Alden Woolford had three goals and an assist apiece and Mary Kate Myers also scored three goals for the Tigers (10-4, 3-0).

' Sewanee's men topped North Central (Ill.) 11-8 on Friday with three goals and an assist from Henry Burns, two goals and two assists from Thomas Lynde, 11 saves from Tal Wharton and 10 of 12 faceoffs and 10 ground balls from Ryan Stubits. The Tigers (6-4, 2-0) then beat Oglethorpe 21-1 in an SAA match Saturday as Thomas Oliver and Burns each had three goals and an assist and Will Pratt recorded three assists with two goals.

Football

' UTC football coach Tom Arth will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $12 with a meal, $4 without.
