Area Sports Notes: CCS girls' 4x200 relay among Spring Fling champions

The Chattanooga Christian 4x200 girls' relay team was among the area TSSAA state champions in the 2018 Spring Fling at Murfreesboro. Anslee McGlocklin, Olivia Hoffman, Sarah O'Shea and Laura Beth Turner ran to victory in the Division II-A track and field meet Friday in 1 minute, 45.62 seconds. CCS also was second in the girls' 4x800 relay and third in the girls' 4x400 and boys' 4x800.

' Lee University junior Justin Brooks finished fourth in the men's 400-meter dash and fifth with his twin Josiah Brooks sixth in the NCAA Division II track and field meet Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Josiah also was 11th out of 23 participants in the triple jump, and Lee senior Audrey Smith was 11th in the women's 5000.

' Tennessee Wesleyan's Josh Parson from Rhea County and Dillan Elkins finished third and sixth in the men's 200-meter finals Saturday at the NAIA track and field nationals at Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Elkins was fifth with Bryan College's James Eliezer eighth in the 400. Elkins, Kenny Benton, John Gould and Devonte Fletcher were fifth in the 4x400 relay, and TWU's Cadarius Harris from Tyner was eighth in the 100. The Bulldogs' 4x100 group had the third best time in the preliminaries but was disqualified in the finals.

Golf

' Gordon Lee added to its spring sports riches with the GHSA boys' Class A public school golf team championship this past week, successfully defending its 2017 title. The Chickamauga school, also the winner of the state baseball title, won by 34 strokes at the Double Oaks Golf Club. The Trojans' Tucker Windham tied for medalist honors with a two-round total of 143, including a second-round 69. Gray Weldon was fourth with a 148 total, with Jacob Carlock finishing sixth at 151. "It was an outstanding team effort on the second day to increase the margin from a close eight strokes after the first round to a winning margin of 34 strokes," coach Todd Windham said. "The guys really stepped up and played an incredible final round. They broke the school record of 303 that we set last year in winning state." The Lady Trojans were the runners-up at Reynolds Lake Oconee with a 341 total: Jessica Hickman's 169 and McCall Miller's 172.

' Tennessee Wesleyan junior Maddi Balthrop from Chattanooga and seniors Krista Reinhardt from Bryan and Caroline Griffin from Dalton State were among the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes announced Thursday for women's golf. Criteria include at least junior status and a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in addition to significant athletic contributions. Griffin is a repeat honoree.
