SEC football rankings and rantings

All times p.m. and Eastern

1(A). ALABAMA (5-0)

The Trent Richardson Heisman bandwagon has officially hit third gear, and while there are some seats available, occupancy is starting to grow after Richardson torched Florida. After getting a career-best 181 rushing yards in the Tide's thumping of the Gators, Richardson is on a far better pace than 2009 Alabama Heisman winner Mark Ingram. Through five games in '09, Ingram had 83 carries for 487 yards and six scores. Richardson has 622 yards on 96 carries and 10 TDs this year. All aboard.

Saturday: vs. Vanderbilt, 7 (ESPNU)

1(B). LSU (5-0)

Former Tigers cornerback Patrick Peterson was a unanimus All-American and a top-10 pick in the NFL draft last April. His replacement, Tyrann Mathieu may be having a better season. Mathieu forced two fumbles -- returning one for a TD -- and had a sack in the whipping of Kentucky last week. He has accounted for four turnovers and scored two touchdowns.

Saturday: vs. Florida, 3:30 (CBS)

3. ARKANSAS (4-1)

Wow, Tyler Wilson, welcome to the show. Wilson torched Texas A&M, throwing for 510 yards as the Hogs came storming back. Here's saying the reigning SEC player of the week will be on the short list next week, too after the Razorbacks host Auburn on Saturday.

Saturday: vs. Auburn, 7 (ESPN)

4. AUBURN (4-1)

An Auburn defense that has been much maligned (and deservedly so, mind you) through the first four games was simply outstanding in the Tigers' 16-13 upset win at then-No. 10-ranked South Carolina. South Carolina ran one play in Auburn territory before the final minute of the game.

Saturday: at Arkansas, 7 (ESPN)

5. SOUTH CAROLINA (4-1)

Stephen Garcia has been benched after another turnover-plagued performance in Saturday's loss to Auburn. Sophomore Connor Shaw will get his chance to make the USC faithful forget the mistakes of Garcia, who has been picked off an NCAA-worst nine times.

Saturday: vs. Kentucky, 12:21 (WDSI)

6. FLORIDA (4-1)

Wow. That was the type of whipping to which Florida fans are unaccoustomed. Chris Rainey, who had three straight 100-yard games before Saturday's loss to Alabama, had 4 yards on 11 carries. Ouch.

Saturday: at LSU, 3:30 (CBS)

7. VANDERBILT (3-1)

The off week came at a perfect time for Vandy quarterback Larry Smith, who was bounced from the loss against South Carolina on Sept. 24. South Carolina recorded six sacks and harassed Smith all afternoon. While the bye helped him get healthy, he better be healthy this week when the Commodores head to Alabama.

Saturday: at Alabama, 7, (ESPNU)

8. TENNESSEE (3-1)

The Vols have proven they would be the beast of the Big East and the monster of the MAC. Now let's see if they are ready to get back into the SEC East race. It starts Saturday.

Saturday: vs. Georgia, 7 (ESPN2)

9. GEORGIA (3-2)

OK, have we reached another Mark Richt job-security bowl? Here's saying that a win Saturday would cool Richt's seat greatly -- and leave the Bulldogs in the driver's seat in the SEC East.

Saturday: at Tennessee, 7 (ESPN2)

10. MISSISSIPPI STATE (2-3)

Other than Charlie Sheen, has any one had a tougher year than Dan Mullen? Mullen was thought to be the front-runner for the Florida job. He was the hot name in coaching circles after getting MSU into the top 15 in the polls. Now Mullen and the Bulldogs have some serious work to do better than 6-6.

Saturday: at UAB, noon (SportSouth)

11. OLE MISS (2-3)

You go, Fightin' Rebel Black Bears. It will be something on which the next coaching staff can build.

Saturday: off

12. KENTUCKY (2-3)

Looking for some good news, UK fan? SEC sack leader Melvin Ingram's status is uncertain for South Carolina for Saturday. That's a positive, right? Granted, that'll mean more time for Jadeveon Clowney, but still.

Saturday: at S. Carolina, 12:21 (WDSI)
